Lough Boora Sculpture Park has been developed on cutaway bogs. The work reveals how art can help to rebuild a relationship between people, place and non-human others. There is one more creative impulse, an agency that is at the heart of this matter, sphagnum – peat moss. We have collections of moss in glass jars filled with water next to our studio window. Sphagnum grows noticeably taller and denser in this artificial environment. I cannot believe the strength of such a flimsy thing, it can rise above the water as it moves towards the light. On any sunny day numerous small bubbles come out from the translucent leaves. Tiny insects are swimming in and around the plants. Bog lands are not wastelands. Raised bogs are as monumental and significant as redwood forests. Sphagnum is an extraordinary living thing. It is small, fragile but at the same time resilient, never harmful. Always close to water it is absorbent, spongy to walk on. Softness is the essence of the plant. Art can be a response to small things. Use your sensibility to listen to the breath of the bog. Imagine the sight and sound as the spore capsules explode. Feel the energy as the air is filled with an infinity of spores, another cycle begins. Reiko Goto Collins

This book traces the creation, from concept through installation, of a major new sculpture, Body Politic, by artist David Stromeyer. Stromeyer has made art on his land in northern Vermont for fifty years. His work is found in private, municipal, and museum collections in the U.S. and internationally. In 2014, David and his wife Sarah created Cold Hollow Sculpture Park, opening their property with seventy of his large, outdoor sculptures, to the public. Since then, the Park has become a nonprofit hosting thousands of visitors and a seasonal series of multidiscipline programs as well an annual Artist-in-Residence.This is also the story of Stromeyer as a young artist, coming to Vermont to realize his vision - the marriage of art and landscape - by establishing a life and a studio to ultimately fulfill his dream. He speaks of what urges him to be a maker. He describes and discusses his influences, processes, choice of materials, use of narrative, how he uses color, the interplay between art and science, and, finally, the importance of play in his art. Stromeyer says: "For forty-five years I thought of my sculptures as individual expressions. With the formation of Cold Hollow Sculpture Park, I realize that I have always been working on one big artwork, which is the Park." Jeffrey Rubinoff is one of the great sculptors in steel of the second half of the twentieth century.
