În ce măsură poate contracara omenirea amenințările majore care pot veni dinspre mediul natural? Dereglări climatice, radiații solare, epidemii, explozii vulcanice, tornade, secetă, cutremure, tsunami – lista e nesfârșită. Trăim de fapt într-o lume extrem de ostilă și avem atât de infime capacități de a o struni. În raport cu datele din anul de grație 1985, Lucian Boia face în această carte o trecere în revistă a diverselor dezastre care și-au pus amprenta asupra evoluției societăților și a civilizației, precum și o comparație cu momentul actual, când este evident că funcţionarea mecanismului om–natură suferă un dezechilibru, foarte probabil ireversibil. Într-adevăr, lumea nu se va sfârși, spune autorul, din pricina cutremurelor, sau a petelor solare, sau a variației axei Pământului. Nici chiar din pricina pandemiilor. Primejdia cea mare o reprezintă acum încălzirea climei și efectul de seră, fenomen global și potențial distrugător, a cărui răspundere o poartă cu precădere omul. Dar nu e deloc sigur că omenirea mai poate opri procesul, sau măcar că își dorește să-și schimbe modul de viață. Abia în acest punct specia umană riscă să dispară cu adevărat. „Dacă ne vom mai încălzi cu câteva grade, să ne aşteptăm ca o teribilă criză de civilizaţie să lovească omenirea. Se va petrece – cine ştie? – o mare migraţie spre Nord, Africa revărsându‑se asupra Europei. Migraţia actuală determinată de sărăcie şi de conflicte armate se va amplifica din motive climatice. Lumea va fierbe, atât la propriu, cât şi la figurat. Dar dacă lucrurile vor merge și mai departe? Va mai exista scăpare? Să emigrăm în spaţiul cosmic? Nici o altă planetă a Sistemului Solar nu oferă condiţii de viaţă cât de cât asemănătoare cu cele de pe Terra. There is a considerable difference between real history and discourse history - this book stems from this idea. The author points out that history is constantly reconstructed, adapted and sometimes mythified from the perspective of the present day, of present states of mind and ideologies. Boia closely examines the process of historical culture and conscience in nineteenth and twentieth century Romania, particularly concentrating on the impact of the national ideology on history. Based upon his findings, the author identifies several key mythical configurations and analyses the manner in which Romanians have reconstituted their own highly ideologized history over the last two centuries. The strength of History and Myth in Romanian Consciousness lies in the author's ability to fully deconstruct the entire Romanian historiographic system and demonstrate the increasing acuteness of national problems in general, and in particular the exploitation of history to support national ideology.
