Sono passati trent’anni dalla prima edizione di questo libro. A quel tempo ero un critico letterario e lavoravo all’Espresso. L’editore mi chiese di scrivere qualcosa sui libri che mi avevano formato. Di fatto un saggio sulla letteratura. Mio figlio Francesco aveva due anni, e il suo gioco preferito era provare ad arrampicarsi sulle librerie di casa, che occupavano tutte le pareti possibili. Così ho pensato che potevo scrivere una lettera per lui, in modo che potesse poi arrampicarsi meglio, raggiungendo anche i libri più inaccessibili. E così, una mattina d’estate, ho incominciato la mia lettera in uno stabilimento balneare del Salento, pieno di bambini che gridavano, si facevano gonfiare i materassini, e costruivano castelli di sabbia. Gli stessi che troviamo nei grandi romanzi. Ho pensato: bene, ho cinque libri da raccontare, ognuno è un tema dell’esistenza. L’isola del tesoro è l’inquietudine, Il giovane Holden è la tenerezza, le poesie di T.S. Eliot sono la passione, Il soccombente di Thomas Bernhard il talento, e infine arriva Jorge Luis Borges, e spiega a tutti perché i libri sono della materia di cui è fatto l’universo. Il libro ha un bel successo, per anni resta in libreria: in Italia come in Francia, e in Germania, in Portogallo, negli Stati Uniti. In Spagna resta nella classifica dei libri più venduti per un anno. Intanto mio figlio Francesco cresce e io pubblico una nuova edizione di questo testo, aggiungendo un capitolo sulle Lezioni americane di Italo Calvino. Per chiudere il cerchio. Di tanto in tanto in questi anni mi è capitato di rileggerne delle pagine. E ogni volta mi rendono felice. C’è quasi un incanto in queste righe che oggi credo non sarei più capace di ripetere. Una fiducia verso l’infanzia, quell’infanzia capace di capire tutto, i grandi classici, i grandi poeti, e gli scrittori, per così dire, difficili. Quell’infanzia che ci insegna ed è persino capace di guidarci. Quel mondo bambino che abbiamo perso e che è assai più saggio del mondo adulto che anno dopo anno ci piace sempre meno. Dedico a tutti i lettori, adulti e bambini, questa favola leggera, eppure serissima, dove i libri si parlano tra loro e ci rendono vivi. Caro Francesco, questa mattina, una mattina di mare, una mattina d’estate, ti sei svegliato e mi hai detto: «Papà storia», portandomi il libro della coccinella. Eri ancora spettinato, con quei tuoi riccioli biondi scomposti, ma appena appena. Ed eri a piedi nudi. Ti ho detto di sederti sul gradino e ho pensato che questo libro poteva incominciare da qui. «Si può parlare di romanzi a un bambino scrivendo un romanzo? È un’impresa difficile.
