The aim and scope of this book primarily deals with conceptual design of sea-going marine vessels. While there are a few books on similar topics available to the reader, this book takes a different approach to address the developments of many different types of vessels. Of significant interest would be the estimation of principal parameters of such as vessels and the various coefficients required for design purposes. These parameters are obviously not readily available without carrying out an extensive search and background study. Hopefully, this textbook may be of relevance to designers and career naval architects who need a reference to initiate the design process.

As World War One drew to a close, Christen Smith left the Royal Norwegian Navy to start his own shipping company. After a stumbling start, he succeeded in creating a totally new shipping segment: heavy-lift transport. Christen Smith’s vessels became the industry standard for ships lifting and carrying locomotives, railway cars, river boats and other heavy cargo that needed to be transported from one continent to another. One hundred years later, Belships has sailed through wars, upswings and downturns. After leaving the heavy-lift trade almost fifty years ago, the company has been involved in a broad range of shipping activities. Today, Belships is a significant player in the dry bulk segment, pursuing an ambitious growth strategy. This is the story about the people, the ships and the many dramatic events that shaped one hundred years of shipping history. Per Arne Totland is a Norwegian writer of fiction and non-fiction books. He has previously been the owner and CEO of an Oslo-based consulting firm and a Senior Vice President with a global chemicals group. He started his career as a journalist and for several years was a reporter and news anchor with the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).

Cross Channel And Short Sea Ferries written by Ambrose Greenway and has been published by Seaforth Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-30 with Transportation categories.

This new book, beautifully illustrated with a magnificent collection of over 300 photographs, covers the development of a much-loved type of vessel, the 'classic' cross channel or short sea passenger ferry often described as a liner in miniature. From the mid–19th century paddle ferries slowly evolved into screw-driven steamers but it was the advent of the steam turbine and the construction of the railway steamers The Queen and Brighton in 1903 that caught the attention of the world. Similarly-propelled ships multiplied and their use soon spread to the Antipodes, Japan, the Mediterranean and North America. In 1912 Rudolf Diesel's new oil engine went to sea in a cargo ship but it was not until 1925 that it was first employed to widespread acclaim in the Danish North Sea packet Parkeston. In 1934 it made its debut on the English Channel with the Belgian Government's striking 25-knot motor ferry Prins Baudouin. The inexorable increase in car travel from the 1930s led to the development of a new breed of specialised car ferry accessed through bow and stern doors and the proliferation of these after WW2 led to the eventual demise of the 'classic' passenger ferry in the 1960s.With its informative introductory texts and abundant photographs and detailed captions, this book will appeal to ship enthusiasts around the world and to all those who mourn the passing of the golden age of the passenger ship.
