This book follows the evolution of ocean liner design, its grandeur and occasionally its lower-class simplicity. There are the lavish suites, staterooms, even the austerity of third class and steerage. But mostly it is the luxury columned lounges, marble fireplaces, the chandeliers and the palms that are featured on these highly illustrated pages.

The principal aim of this book is to address the international legal questions arising from the 'right of visit on the high seas' in the twenty-first century. This right is considered the most significant exception to the fundamental principle of the freedom of the high seas (the freedom, in peacetime, to remain free of interference by ships of another flag). It is this freedom that has been challenged by a recent significant increase in interceptions to counter the threats of international terrorism and WMD proliferation, or to suppress transnational organised crime at sea, particularly the trafficking of narcotics and smuggling of migrants. The author questions whether the principle of non-interference has been so significantly curtailed as to have lost its relevance in the contemporary legal order of the oceans. The book begins with an historical and theoretical examination of the framework underlying interception. This historical survey informs the remainder of the work, which then looks at the legal framework of the right of visit, contemporary challenges to the traditional right, interference on the high seas for the maintenance of international peace and security, interferences to maintain the 'bon usage' of the oceans (navigation and fishing), piracy j'ure gentium'and current counter-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia, the problems posed by illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing, interdiction operations to counter drug and people trafficking, and recent interception operations in the Mediterranean Sea organised by FRONTEX.

The scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet at Scapa Flow, Orkney on 21 June 1919 on the orders of Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter was one of the most extraordinary events in naval history. To the astonishment of those who witnessed it, one of the most powerful navies in history began to sink, and by late morning, ten battleships, six battlecruisers, eight light cruisers and a host of smaller ships lay on the seabed. But what happened after was equally bizarre. Although at the time the Admiralty stated that raising ships was impossible, within a few years Scapa Flow became a scene of one of the largest salvage operations ever undertaken. In this book, S.C. George tells the story of the German High Seas Fleet, from its origins to its role during the Battle of Jutland and subsequent surrender and scuttling, and also celebrates the ingenuity, courage and resourcefulness of those who raised the Kaiser's great navy from its watery grave.

For as long as anyone can remember ports have been the focal point of many cultures. Ships from all over the world dock in their harbours. What's it like to be on board those ships though? And what does the world look like when seen from the galley? In From the High Seas one of the ship's main characters speaks: the cook. The man - sometimes woman - who keeps the crew's spirits high with his culinary skills. Forty cooks from all over the world - from China to Brasil and from South Africa to Poland - give their favourite spirit-lifting recipes in this book. The recipes are from their birthplaces and are meant for groups of ten to twenty people. Just as it would be on board. And every cook unveils the personal story behind the recipe. From the High Seas is more than a just a cookbook. Alongside each recipe, there is a 'tall story' about the sea. The cooks not only tell exciting anecdotes, they also tell about the harsh reality on board because even ship's cooks feel homesick from time to time. The interviews are by the journalist Gerard Keijsers. Photographer Peter Paul Klapwijk created colourful and unforgettable portraits of every cook on or near his ship, with an ingredient featured in their favourite recipe. Apart from the recipes and stories, From the High Seas also provides an impression of the work going on in the world's biggest port: Rotterdam. In those black and white pictures you can 'taste' the unique atmosphere of the warehouse, quay and sea. In the eighteen months since publication, 9000 copies of this book have been sold in the Netherlands. From the High Seas got excellent reviews in Dutch newspapers and magazines.
