In the Meditteranean Sea thousands of years there is a terrible war that has raged on land and at sea for decades. Philip is the captain of a fighting galley in this war. He has worked his way up from marine to sergeant to captain, surviving numerous battles and losing many friends on the way. For a while he was enslaved and chained to the rower's bench on an enemy galley. He has fought battles at sea and on land becoming one of the most famous fighters that his people have. The rich and powerful court him, seeing a way to earn favour with their gods if Philip is their friend. He enjoys the favours that his fame bring him, money, influence and women. The woman he wants most is Ellesmere. She is from a wealthy family and Philip has had her for one night, now he wants her permanently. Although he wants her for his wife, is she after him for his money? The war suddenly gets worse for Philip and his people. A massive combined army of their enemies invades. Philp and others are formed into a naval regiment to reinforce the army. As the army sets off to battle the enemies fleets are also coming.Philip is destined to fight in two great battles-one on land and one at sea. Although Philip and his comrades are confident of a final victory Philip has heard rumours of traitors amongst his people. Are these people and some of the rich trying to aid the invaders by undermining the defence? As Philip and his comrades meet the enemy in great battles on land and sea they do not know that their enemies have changed the way they fight, and have a secret weapon that might change everything. The difference between victory and enslavement depends on the outcome of these two battles, and Philip is deeply involved in both.

Thousands of year ago in the Mediterranean Sea a decades long war is raging. Philip has already been a soldier, a sergeant of marines and a slave rower who escaped in a revolt. Now he is an officer on a fighting galley. As the war continues he fights in sea battles where the enemy is starting to use massive galleys that seem impossible to fight against. Then suddenly until there is a truce, and there are great hopes that the war might be over.During the truce Philip is sent to take part in an attack on a pirate stronghold. He personally leads a near impossible attack up a precipitous cliff path to overrun the stronghold. Hailed as a hero he finds himself mixing with the rich and powerful, and sees again the woman he lusts after. She and Philip have been lovers before, but her rich family controls her closely, keeping Philip away. The truce collapses and fighting on land and at sea rages again. Philip and other marines are sent to help the army lay siege to an enemy held town. A tunnel is dug under its walls, Philip leads a party through it into the town to open the gates for his army to flood in. Once again he is hailed as a hero and receives a large reward.Although Philip is now regarded as one of his people's greatest fighters he loses close friends in the war, even his original galley falls to the ravages of time and war and is broken up.Feted by senior officers and the rich, Philip tries to avoid the intrigues that go with such people. He invests his money with the widow of a friend. Unusually she has taken over her husband's merchant business and promises Philip she can make him a lot of money. With his new fame and a promotion Philip wonders how far he might go in the navy, and although he wants an end to the war it does seem to give him unlimited opportunities for what he enjoys, adventure and wealth.

The Royal Marines Commandos are one of the greatest special forces in the world. Their achievement, toughness, professionalism and enterprise puts them in the same league as such other elites as the SAS, the Paras, the US Marines and the French Foreign Legion. This is their stirring and fascinating story, brilliantly and authoritatively told by Major General Julian Thompson, commander of the Commando Brigade in the Falklands. The Marines of the eighteenth and nineteeth centuries would not recognize their descendents in the second half of the twentieth. Marines shared with their sailor comrades all the disadvantages of serving at sea (as Samual Johnson remarked, 'being in a jail with the chance of being drowned'), but were denied the glittering advantages open to their naval shipmates - including promotion to the highest rank and the lion's share of any prize money (sometimes equivalent to winning the lottery in today's terms). The Royal Marines: From Sea Soldiers to a Special Force tells how this all changed in the middle of the twentieth century. With their transformation to Commandos and landing craft crews, they set the scene for their leading role for the next fifty years and into the future. 'vivid extracts from personal accounts' Field Marshal Lord Carver, Times Literary Supplement 'A fine narrative history... that does not hold back from strong opinion.' Legion 'Compelling narrative... spiced with wry observations.' Soldier

"Heroism, tragedy, devotion to duty, and scandal are just a few of the ingredients that make up this dramatic account of troopship losses in wartime. International in scope, the book offers a compilation of stories about historic troopship disasters caused by torpedoes, aerial attacks, mines, surface fire, foul weather, friendly fire, and poor planning by military decision makers ... Board of inquiry hearings, action reports, survivor debriefings, and personal correspondence collected from archives in Germany, Italy, Russia, Australia, Britain, and the United States help tell the stories of the fifty vessels described in the book. An introductory chapter provides an overview of troopship evolution and losses at sea, beginning with the age of galley warfare. The first to provide a sweeping survey of the subject, this book pays long overdue tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in vast oceans far from home"--Dust jkt.
