The book presents the cyclicity and micro-cyclicity phenomena which occurred during climate changes and during marine transgressions and regressions. As calculated by the author on the basis of geological research, the climatic cycle of the Earth allows a better understanding of climate changes and associated geological processes in the last 20,000 years. In addition, the author discusses the structure of the sub-Quaternary bedrock and analyses complex geological structures of the Baltic Sea Quaternary deposits. Individual chapters address key aspects of: tectonic and geological analysis of the Baltic Sea basin detailed tectonic and geological analysis of the Polish Baltic Sea and Polish coastal zone global geotectonic cycles of the supercontinents cyclicity and micro-cyclicity arising in the atmosphere and hydrosphere of the Earth the climatic cycle of the Earth, presented for a better understanding of climate changes and associated geological processes in the last 20,000 years calculating the extent of the influence of climate change and tectonic movements on marine transgressions and regressions simulation and correlation of the 310-year climate cycle predicted future Earth climate cycles in the Northern Hemisphere The book will be useful for students and scientists of marine geology, oceanography, geography and environmental engineering. It will also be of practical utility for all specialists dealing with marine basins and coastal zones, including marine geologists, coastal geologists and geomorphologists, geographers, as well as engineering geologists, geotechnicians and civil engineers. The book is generally related to the discipline of marine geology, and deals directly with the Baltic Sea basin. However, the climate cycle of the Earth, which affects the course of marine transgressions and regressions, has a supra-regional dimension.

The use of small unoccupied aerial systems (sUAS) for acquiring close-range remotely sensed data has substantially increased in the past 5 years. A primary focus of early research was on physical systems and photogrammetric techniques. However, as sUAS technology continues to improve and more sophisticated payloads are utilized, such as lidar and multispectral cameras, applications have expanded to nearly all subdisciplines within Geography. This edited volume is intended to showcase the various ways in which sUAS are used in geographic research, including geomorphology, environmental and hazard monitoring, biogeography, and urban and sociocultural geography.

Mesophotic Coral Ecosystems written by Yossi Loya and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-22 with Science categories.

This book summarizes what is known about mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) geographically and by major taxa. MCEs are characterized by light-dependent corals and associated communities typically found at depths ranging from 30-40 m. and extending to over 150 m. in tropical and subtropical ecosystems. They are populated with organisms typically associated with shallow coral reefs, such as macroalgae, corals, sponges, and fishes, as well as specialist species unique to mesophotic depths. During the past decade, there has been an increasing scientific and management interest in MCEs expressed by the exponential increase in the number of publications studying this unique environment. Despite their close proximity to well-studied shallow reefs, and the growing evidence of their importance, our scientific knowledge of MCEs is still in its early stages. The topics covered in the book include: regional variation in MCEs; similarities and differences between mesophotic and shallow reeftaxa, biotic and abiotic conditions, biodiversity, ecology, geomorphology, and geology; potential connectivity between MCEs and shallow reefs; MCE disturbances, conservation, and management challenges; and new technologies, key research questions/knowledge gaps, priorities, and future directions in MCE research.

Polar Night Marine Ecology written by Jørgen Berge and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-08 with Science categories.

Until recently, the prevailing view of marine life at high latitudes has been that organisms enter a general resting state during the dark Polar Night and that the system only awakens with the return of the sun. Recent research, however, with coordinated, multidisciplinary field campaigns based on the high Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard, have provided a radical new perspective. Instead of a system in dormancy, a new perspective of a system in full operation and with high levels of activity across all major phyla is emerging. Examples of such activities and processes include: Active marine organisms at sea surface, water column and the sea-floor. At surface we find active foraging in seabirds and fish, in the water column we find a high biodiversity and activity of zooplankton and larvae such as active light induced synchronized diurnal vertical migration, and at seafloor there is a high biodiversity in benthic animals and macroalgae. The Polar Night is a period for reproduction in many benthic and pelagic taxa, mass occurrence of ghost shrimps (Caprellides), high abundance of Ctenophores, physiological evidence of micro- and macroalgal cells that are ready to utilize the first rays of light when they appear, deep water fishes found at water surface in the Polar night, and continuous growth of bivalves throughout the winter. These findings not only begin to shape a new paradigm for marine winter ecology in the high Arctic, but also provide conclusive evidence for a top-down controlled system in which primary production levels are close to zero. In an era of environmental change that is accelerated at high latitudes, we believe that this new insight is likely to strongly impact how the scientific community views the high latitude marine ecosystem. Despite the overwhelming darkness, the main environmental variable affecting marine organisms in the Polar Night is in fact light. The light regime during the Polar Night is unique with respect to light intensity, spectral composition of light and photoperiod.
