This book introduces the reader to the field of jet substructure, starting from the basic considerations for capturing decays of boosted particles in individual jets, to explaining state-of-the-art techniques. Jet substructure methods have become ubiquitous in data analyses at the LHC, with diverse applications stemming from the abundance of jets in proton-proton collisions, the presence of pileup and multiple interactions, and the need to reconstruct and identify decays of highly-Lorentz boosted particles. The last decade has seen a vast increase in our knowledge of all aspects of the field, with a proliferation of new jet substructure algorithms, calculations and measurements which are presented in this book. Recent developments and algorithms are described and put into the larger experimental context. Their usefulness and application are shown in many demonstrative examples and the phenomenological and experimental effects influencing their performance are discussed. A comprehensive overview is given of measurements and searches for new phenomena performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. This book shows the impressive versatility of jet substructure methods at the LHC.

During 2012, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has delivered proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV center of mass energy to the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These two experiments have been designed to discover the Higgs boson and to search for new particles predicted by several theoretical models, as supersymmetry. The Higgs boson has been discovered by ATLAS and CMS experiments on July, 4th of 2012, starting a new era of discoveries in particle physics domain. With the confirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson, searches for new physics involving this boson are of major interest. In particular, data can be used to look for new massive particles that decay into the Higgs boson accompanied with other particles of the standard model. One expected signature is a Higgs boson produced with a top quark, the two heaviest particles in the standard model. The standard model predicts a cross section of top-Higgs production, then any enhancement of their associated production will be a clear signature of physics beyond the standard model. In addition, the existence of physics beyond the standard model can also be reflected by resonances that decay into a top-quark and a Higgs boson. In the first part of my work I describe the theoretical and experimental foundations of the standard model, as well as the experimental device. In the same theoretical chapter, I also discuss the formulation of an extension of the standard model. In addition, I describe a feasibility study of a search of one of the particles predicted by such model. The second part contains the realization of the search for a top partner, T_, within the CMS experiment. This top partner is a new particle very similar to the standard model top quark, but much heavier, that can decay into a top quark and a Higgs boson. The analysis looks for this particle in the full hadronic final state, where the Higgs boson decays into two b-quarks and the top quark decays into three standard model quarks, a b and two light quarks. In this channel, I reconstruct its mass from the identification of all its decay products. As a result of the analysis, I show the limits on the T_ production cross section from the number of observed events in the specific signature.

A search is performed for electroweak production of a vector-like top quark partner T of charge 2/3 in association with a standard model top or bottom quark, using 2.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collision data at sqrt(s)= 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. The search targets T quarks decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson in fully hadronic final states. For a T quark with mass above 1 TeV the daughter top quark and Higgs boson are highly Lorentz-boosted and can each appear as a single hadronic jet. Jet substructure and b tagging techniques are used to identify the top quark and Higgs boson jets, and to suppress the standard model backgrounds. An excess of events is searched for in the T quark candidate mass distribution in the data, which is found to be consistent with the expected backgrounds. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the single T quark production cross sections and the branching fraction B(T to tH), and these vary between 0.31 and 0.93 pb for T quark masses in the range 1000-1800 GeV. This is the first search for single electroweak production of a vector-like T quark in fully hadronic final states.

A search for single production of vector-like top quark partners (T) decaying into a Higgs boson and a top quark is performed using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns. The top quark decay includes an electron or a muon while the Higgs boson decays into a pair of b quarks. No significant excess over standard model backgrounds is observed. Exclusion limits on the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction are derived in the T quark mass range 700 to 1800 GeV. For a mass of 1000 GeV, values of the product of the production cross section and the branching fraction greater than 0.8 and 0.7 pb are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming left- and right-handed coupling of the T quark to standard model particles, respectively. This is the first analysis setting exclusion limits on the cross section of singly produced vector-like T quarks at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV.

We performed a search for a vector-like heavy T quark that is produced in pairs and that decays to a top quark and a Higgs boson. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at √s=8 TeV. For T quarks with large mass values the top quarks and Higgs bosons can have significant Lorentz boosts, so that their individual decay products often overlap and merge. Methods are applied to resolve the substructure of such merged jets. We also derived upper limits on the production cross section of a T quark with mass between 500 and 1000 GeV/c 2. If the T quark decays exclusively to tH, the observed (expected) lower limit on the mass of the T quark is 745 (773) GeV/c 2 at 95% confidence level. For the first time an algorithm is used for tagging boosted Higgs bosons that is based on a combination of jet substructure information and b tagging.

The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle. With a coupling to the Higgs boson close to unity, the top quark plays a special role in electroweak symmetry breaking as well as in physics beyond the Standard Model. An accurate measurement of its properties can provide key information for understanding the physics at the TeV scale. In this dissertation, two measurements of the top quark properties are presented. The first part of this dissertation presents the first-ever ATLAS search for the associated production of a single top quark and a photon. This analysis is performed with 139 fb−1 of pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC at [square root symbol] s = 13 TeV. Only final states with exactly one lepton and at least one photon are considered in this analysis. In the second part, results from the combination of ATLAS searches for flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) in t->Hq decays are presented. Four FCNC analyses, probing different Higgs decay modes, performed with 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector in 2015-2016 are considered in the combination. They search for top-quark pair events in which one top quark decays into Wb and the other top quark decay into Hq

The top quark, when it was finally discovered at Fermilab in 1995 completed the three-generation structure of the Standard Model (SM) and opened up the new field of top quark physics. Viewed as just another SM quark, the top quark appears to be a rather uninteresting species. Produced predominantly, in hadron-hadron collisions, through strong interactions, it decays rapidly without forming hadrons, and almost exclusively through the single mode t 2!Wb. The relevant CKM coupling V{sub tb} is already determined by the (three-generation) unitarity of the CKM matrix. Rare decays and CP violation are unmeasurable small in the SM. Yet the top quark is distinguished by its large mass, about 35 times larger than the mass of the next heavy quark, and intriguingly close to the scale of electroweak (EW) symmetry breaking. This unique property raises a number of interesting questions. Is the top quark mass generated by the Higgs mechanism as the SM predicts and is its mass related to the top-Higgs-Yukawa coupling? Or does it play an even more fundamental role in the EW symmetry breaking mechanism? If there are new particles lighter than the top quark, does the top quark decay into them? Could non-SM physics first manifest itself in non-standard couplings of the top quark which show up as anomalies in top quark production and decays? Top quark physics tries to answer these questions. Several properties of the top quark have already been examined at the Tevatron. These include studies of the kinematical properties of top production, the measurements of the top mass, of the top production cross-section, the reconstruction of t{bar t}pairs in the fully hadronic final states, the study of [tau] decays of the top quark, the reconstruction of hadronic decays of the W boson from top decays, the search for flavor changing neutral current decays, the measurement of the W helicity in top decays, and bounds on t{bar t} spin correlations. Most of these measurements are limited by the small sample of top quarks collected at the Tevatron up to now. The LHC is, in comparison, a top factory, producing about 8 million t{bar t}pairs per experiment per year at low luminosity (10 fb−1/year), and another few million (anti- )tops in EW single (anti- )top quark production. They therefore expect that top quark properties can be examined with significant precision at the LHC. Entirely new measurements can be contemplated on the basis of the large available statistics.
