Landscape ecology has been a discrete, established discipline since at least 1980. Its marine counterpart, seascape ecology, is barely a decade old, its first applications dating from the early 2010s. Lack of perception of the marine environment hampers the adoption of many landscape ecology approaches to the sea. Seascape ecology relies on special technologies such as remote sensing (either acoustic or optical), robotics, and scuba diving. Both disciplines deal with the spatial configuration of ecosystems and consider environmental heterogeneity and dynamics as the main subjects of study and the key for ecosystem functioning and persistence. Seascape is here intended as the totality of natural and anthropogenic characters of a marine region. To the geologist, it is defined by sedimentology and underwater geomorphology, to the biologist by the nature of the living cover of the seafloor, to the ecologist by the relationships among functional processes and the spatial organization of ecosystems. The goal of this research topic is to encourage original research, case studies, reviews, and viewpoints to identify research priority gaps and possibly contribute to filling them in. We will appreciate, in particular, manuscripts dealing with recent advances such as high-resolution habitat mapping; underwater soundscape and biophony; development, application and validation of biotic indices to assess seafloor integrity (as requested, for instance, by recent European Directives). Papers of interest may discuss the multivarious facets of stability and describe resistance and resilience patterns, the role of stress and disturbance, regime shift and phase shift, or may take up the challenge of integrating coastal landscape and seascape analyses. Studies of long-term series are welcome, as well as methodological improvements, and macroecological approaches on the importance of species diversity and connectivity in seascape organization.

The Indonesian Seas Large Marine Ecosystem is a region shared by Indonesia (98 percent) and north coast of Timor-Leste (2 percent). Characterized by warm surface temperature and the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) that contributes to climate regulation, the region is a hub of mega biodiversity with unique habitats and ecosystems that offer high fisheries productivities and various other valuable ecosystem goods and services. The region has been instrumental to ensure nutrition, livelihood and coastal communities wellbeing. Valuable ecosystem goods and services that the region has to offer have been exploited by various resource users. The ecosystem services valuation carried out for the ISLME in 2020 estimated the total gross production value (GVP) at more than USD 20 billion annually, with the largest contributions from fisheries and aquaculture (the best-known use of marine ecosystem services) and marine tourism (approximately 10 percent). A 2018 PEMSEA report showed that the Indonesian seas support more than USD 180 billion of economic activities annually and can stimulate increased growth, jobs, food security, if actions are taken to protect the region sustainability in the long-term. However, growing fishing pressures, increasing human and economic activities, land conversion, among others, have posed as real threats to the region’s vital resources.Through the FAO/GEF-supported ISLME project, Indonesia and Timor-Leste formulated the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA) in close collaboration with national scientific advisory groups (NSAGs), fisheries and marine experts and stakeholders. The TDA is an intensive, scientific document with emphasis on causal chain analysis (CCA), leading to the identification of the five Primary Environmental Concerns (PECs) to the region's sustainability. The five PECs are (i) declining productivity and sustainability of ISLME fishery and aquaculture, (ii) degradation and loss of marine habitats, (iii) marine and land-based pollution, (iv) decline of biodiversity and ˚key species, (v) climate change impacts. Developed in intensive consultation with fisheries and marine experts in both countries, the TDA also presents the experts recommendations, useful to inform policy and decision-making process.The TDA serves as the basis for the formulation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP) that features clear initiatives, set targets, timeframe and organizations in-charge to achieve the targets for ISLME region sustainability.

The microbial community in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is dominated by unicellular microorganisms less than a few micrometers in size. Despite the persistent low nutrient concentrations, phytoplankton growth rates appear near maximal, sustained by the recycling of nutrients with plankton population sizes regulated by processes such as zooplankton grazing and viral lysis. Seasonal pulses of particle export to the deep sea and increases in phytoplankton abundance occur during the summer months; however, the factors that result in these imbalances in growth and loss processes are not well understood. Nonetheless, as a result of persistent fieldwork and development of sensitive methodologies, the biogeochemical and ecological dynamics occurring over timescales ranging from diel to interannual are being revealed. This Research Topic covers multiple aspects of microbial oceanography in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre including identification and isolation of microorganisms, quantification of microbial biomass and turnover, metabolism and physiological activities, and microbial-mediated biogeochemical cycling. All of the papers use field data collected by either the Hawaii Ocean Time-series (HOT) program, the Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education (C-MORE) or the Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE). These three programs have greatly increased our understanding of microbial ecology and biogeochemical cycling in the NPSG, in part by providing unparalleled access to the NPSG on oceanographic research vessels.
