Excerpt from Seasoning of Timber The wood next to the bark contains the most water. In the species which do not form heartwood the decrease toward the pith is gradual, but where this is formed the change from a more moist to a drier condition is usually quite abrupt at the sap wood limit. In Longleaf Pine, the wood of the outer 1 inch of a disk may contain 50 per cent of water, that of the next, or second inch, only 35 per cent, and that of the heartwood only 20 per cent. In such a tree the amount of water in any one sec tion varies with the amount of sapwood, and is therefore greater for the upper than the lower cuts, greater for the limbs than stems, and greatest of all in the roots. Different trees, even of the same kind and from the same place, differ as to the amount of water they contain. A thrifty tree contains more water than a stunted one, and a young tree more than an old one, while the wood of all trees varies in its moisture relations with the season of the year. Excerpt from The Open-Tank Method for the Treatment of Timber The former theory of the process held that the hot preservative converted the moisture in the wood into steam and so expelled a large percentage of it, and that the cold bath condensed the steam in the pores of the wood and so formed a vacuum into which the preserva tive was forced by atmospheric pressure. In this way it was thought that the timber became seasoned just before or simultaneously with the entrance of the preservative. From this theory it also followed that green timber containing a large amount of moisture could be. Given a better treatment than seasoned timber, since the greater the amount of moisture in the wood the greater would be the vacuum formed when the vapor is driven off. Excerpt from Seasoning of Wood: A Treatise on the Natural and Artificial Processes Employed in the Preparation of Lumber for Manufacture, With Detailed Explanations of Its Uses, Characteristics and Properties The seasoning and kiln-drying of wood is such an important process in the manufacture of woods that a need for fuller information regarding it, based upon scientific study of the behavior of various species at different mechanical temperatures, and under different drying processes, is keenly felt. Everyone connected with the woodworking industry, or its use in manufactured products, is well aware of the difficulties encountered in properly seasoning or removing the moisture content without injury to the timber, and of its susceptibility to atmospheric, conditions after it has been thoroughly seasoned. There is perhaps no material or substance that, gives up its moisture with more resistance than wood does. It vigorously defies the efforts of human ingenuity to take away from it, without injury or destruction, that with which nature has so generously supplied it. In the past but little has been known of this matter further than the fact that wood contained moisture which had to be removed before the wood could be made use of for commercial purposes. Within recent years, however, considerable interest has been awakened among wood-users in the operation of kiln-drying. The losses occasioned in air-drying and improper kiln-drying, and the necessity for getting the material dry as quickly as possible after it has come from the saw, in order to prepare it for manufacturing purposes, arc bringing about a realization of the importance of a technical knowledge of the subject. Excerpt from Seasoning Hickory Lumber and Handle Blanks Hickory (carya sop.) has earned the reputation of being one of the world's toughest woods. In shock resistance it has no equal. The reputation earned by hickory is based on the performance of high quality material in products requiring a high degree of strength and toughness. Today, a limited quantity of high-grade hickory is available and its value and scarcity are well recognized by the wood-using industries. There is, however, a large volume of low-grade hickory that was bypassed when loggers cut our hard wood forests, and many land managers are troubled by the increasing amount of growing space occupied by it. Although this low-grade hickory does not possess the quality or properties required in many products, it is a potentially valuable wood for many uses. A conference of federal, state, university, and industrial representatives was held in Clemson, S. C. In April 1953, and the Hickory Task Force was organized to promote the utilization of hickory. Accomplishment of this objective will be reached through research and publication of known information. The Southeastern Forest Experiment Station has assumed the responsibility to edit, publish, and distribute reports containing information which will be develop ed under this program. Excerpt from The Art of Developing Curing and Preserving Wood and Lumber Seasoning by what is known as the 'natural process was the first adopted for this purpose, and consisted in a slow drying out of the fluid matter of the wood by exposing it to the action of the open air. As the result sought could only be effected by an exposure of the wood for many seasons, this mode of treatment was termed seasoning, and the treated wood was called seasoned. So generally, and for so longa time has this natural process been in use, that the driving out of the sap by any means is called seasoning, and wood which has parted with any portion of its sap is designated as seasoned. While by seasoning, some of the putrescible substances and fermentable principles are expelled, and the operation of the causes of decay is thus counteracted, or postponed to some extent, its chief object is to put wood into a condition to keep its shape and form.
