Seattle's Historic Restaurants depicts an era of nostalgia and romanticism, and highlights historic photographs of restaurants, postcards, and menus. From 1897 to 1898, thousands of so-called stampeders came through Seattle on their way to the Klondike goldfields. Hungry stampeders could purchase a meal at the Merchant's Cafe (the oldest cafe in Seattle) or one of the many restaurants nearby. For the next 25 years, those who made it rich in Seattle were the restaurateurs, shop owners, and real estate owners. Famous local landmarks such as the Space Needle, Mount Rainier's Paradise Camp, Snoqualmie Falls, and the Empress Hotel are still here, but their menus and clientele have changed over the years. Local haunts like Ivar's Acres of Clams, The Dog House, Andy's Diner, Clark's Restaurants, Coon Chicken Inn, Frederick and Nelson's Tea Room, The Wharf, Von's, The Purple Pup, and the Jolly Roger are just a few of the restaurants featured within."

Manca's Cafâe invented the beloved Dutch Baby pancake, while Trader Vic's gained reverence for its legendary Mai Tais. Places like the railroad car-themed Andy's Diner and the Twin T-P's with its iconic wigwam-shaped dining rooms live on in the city's culinary memory long after their departure. Author Chuck Flood celebrates nearly a thousand of Seattle's vanished eateries, their cuisines and recipes along with a few resilient survivors."--Amazon.com.

Mary Ann Conklin, also known as "Madame Damnable," ran Seattle's first hotel, the Felker House, which burned to the ground in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. The Rainier Hotel was erected quickly following the Great Seattle Fire but razed around 1910. The Denny Hotel, an architectural masterpiece later known as the Washington Hotel, was built in 1890 but torn down in 1907 during the massive regrade that flattened Denny Hill. Upon opening in 1909, the Sorrento Hotel was declared a "credit to Seattle" by the Seattle Times. The Olympic Hotel was the place for Seattle's high society throughout the 1920s. The Hotel Kalmar was a workingman's hotel built in 1881 and was razed for the Seattle tollway. The Lincoln Hotel was destroyed by a tragic fire in 1920, along with its rooftop gardens. The famous and grand Seattle Hotel in Pioneer Square was replaced by a "sinking ship" parking garage, thus sparking preservationists to band together to establish Pioneer Square as a historic district. Robin Shannon is the author of two previous books in Arcadia's Images of America series: Cemeteries of Seattle and Seattle's Historic Restaurants. In this volume, Seattle's historic hotels are preserved in more than 200 vintage photographs, postcards, and memorabilia, allowing readers to revisit visionary hoteliers and magnificent architecture of the past. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

Unique Eats And Eateries Of Seattle written by Jake Uitti and has been published by Reedy Press LLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-15 with Travel categories.

When you think about restaurants in Seattle, a few notable options immediately come to mind. Many will think of smoked salmon and fresh seafood, others might think of the great Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese and Chinese influences in the city. And all those folks would be right! But delving deeper into the culinary catacombs of Seattle, one discovers amazing deep dish pizza, giant sloppy (and delicious) burgers, textbook fried chicken, tantalizing biscuits and even the Seattle hot dog made with grilled onions, jalapenos and cream cheese. Whether sampling fresh ingredients at the Pike Place Market or getting a bowl of noodles at a hole-in-the-wall shop, the Seattle food scene will satisfy your cravings each and every day of the week. Seattle, founded in 1851 as a logging and fishing town, has been home to farm-to-table techniques ever since. And that tradition carries on today - whether you're talking Taichi Kitamura's sushi, Edouardo Jordan's soul food or Renee Erickson's wood-fire oven-cooked veggies. And while this book is an expertly written guide to what’s possible in the Emerald City, sometimes it is the unknown shops you discover along your path that forever stick with you - whether it’s a brand new food truck or a $30 plate of heavenly pasta. But in the meantime, let Unique Eats and Eateries of Seattle be your food guide. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 20.0px; font: 14.7px Arial; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 20.0px; font: 14.7px Arial; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; min-height: 16.0px} p.p3 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; line-height: 17.0px; font: 14.7px Arial; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} span.s1 {font-kerning: none}

Billings exploded when the railroad arrived, and good food was here to stay. Montana Avenue anchored the first establishments serving oysters, chop suey and steaks. Modern comfort arrived with the Northern Hotel and never left. Locals sipped, savored and swung at the Skyline, Bella Vista, Elmo and Windmill Supper Clubs from the 1930s to the 1960s. Entrepreneurs debuted the Level 3 Tea Room, La Toque, Bruno's and New Moon Cafe. Beef still reigns at the Rex, Jake's and Bistecca at the Granary. Writer Stella Fong testifies why names like Yegen, McCormick, Schaer and Honaker have persisted throughout Billings' culinary history.
