Excerpt from Modern Geography Humboldt was, above all, a great traveller, but he was also a man of science in the largest sense, interested not in one group of facts, but in many. The extent of his knowledge and the breadth of his interests enabled him to observe a vast number of phenomena while his particular genius was manifest in the way in which he correlated these, and considered them in their relation to each other. Though it is true that his influence was most direct in the case of natural history, yet in this respect also he pointed to the future, for the geographers of to-day are in debted to the naturalists for some of their finest generalisations. Excerpt from Business Geography Modern geography has become a definite science. Its principles are so well defined that a knowledge of the physical conditions under which a race has lived and now lives gives a reasonably reliable indi cation as to the capacity, activity, Occupations, and business relap tions of that race. In studying this growing science the first step is to understand the main principles. That is the reason for Part I of this book. A second step is to apply the principles to concrete prob lems as is done in Part II. There the community engaged in a particular line of activity is taken as the unit in Order that the geographical relationships may first be studied in relatively simple forms before going on to the more complex regional studies of Parts III and IV. In the regional chapters the aim is to give a clear conception of the way in which geographic conditions influence the products of a region, the capacity of the people, the direction in which their activities are turned, and the nature and extent of their business relations with other regions. Excerpt from The Dawn of Modern Geography, Vol. 2 IN a former volume we attempted to trace the story of geographical movements and the records of travellers and men of science from the conversion of the Roman Empire to the close of the ninth century, thus arriving at one of the darkest periods of the Middle Ages. In the present, or second, part of this survey of mediaeval geography our task will be a different one. For here we begin upon a ground which seems well-nigh entirely barren; we cross that desert which separates the earlier and later Middle Age, the 'romanesque' and the 'gothic'; and we follow the streamlet of western enterprise as it leads us into a country far richer and more abundant than any we have traversed since the age of Constantine (ad. 900. Excerpt from The Dawn of Modern Geography: A History of Exploration and Geographical Science The illustrations we have to offer are principally of the maps of this time. Crude and curious as they may be, they are not the less instructive. For they are the only examples of map-science that have survived to us from their age. To these a few more or less plausible attempts at the recon struction of lost map-schemes have been added; as well as a few illustrations of places or objects which have some connection with the more extensive or remarkable travels of the time. Excerpt from A Practical System of Modern Geography: Or a View of the Present State of the World This I am confident will be found not only the natural, but the philosophical method of teaching Geography; for on all subjects the learner must make himself master of simple things, before he can understand those which are complex. In the present instance, the pupil begins with confidence and alacrity, because he not only knows something about his own town, but the subject itself is highly interesting to him. From these simple descriptions, the pupil is gradually led on, by a series of the plainest and most important questions, to a knowledge of the grand divisions of the globe. When he has become familiar with these divisions, and can without hesitation point them out on the map, he is qualified to commence the Second part. In this part, after a few general observations on the divisions, he is required to learn on the map, the boundaries, names of rivers, towns, &c., and then he commences with a description of the several countries which it contains. In every department of description, great care has been taken to select what is most important for the pupil to know, and to commit to memory, and to reject whatever is of little use; for experience has taught me that long descriptions, however judiciously arranged, do not fail to tire and discourage the young pupil. Some of the more prominent features of the country are therefore all that should be required of the beginner. This work will be found to possess some peculiarities. The use of initial letters, in particular, I consider of much consequence in enabling the pupil to determine the correct answers; so that it is believed in going through the entire work, he will seldom require any assistance from his teacher. The Third part treats of Latitude and Longitude; and perhaps no part of the work is of more importance than this, and particularly as most books of this kind are deficient in this respect. The Fourth part contains an introduction to Astronomy and Physical Geography, together with problems on the Globes, and a Table of Latitude and Longitude of all the principal places on the earth. The numerous tables which the work contains, it is hoped will be found useful and correct. Some of them have been copied with little variation from Morse and Malte Brun, and others have been arranged with much care and considerable labor, expressly for the work. In giving this little volume to the public, I cannot but entertain the hope that I shall contribute in some degree to our improved method of teaching a science so necessary and popular as that of Geography. But how far I shall have the satisfaction of seeing this hope realized, the public must determine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of Geography, Ancient and Modern: With an Atlas IN the second edition of the Elements of Geography, various alterations have been made, with a view better to adapt the information to the present state of the world, and also to make improvements in the general plan of the work. Round numbers have been generally adopted, being more easily remembered, and sufficiently minute in a work of this kind. 4. Statistical and other information exhibited in the form of tables, has been separated in om the body of the work, and formed into a distinct division, under the head of Comparative Geography, with questions in order to facilitate the use of the tables. 5.
