Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2-3, University of Kassel, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The way of teaching a Second Language is still subject of research and discussion today. Current studies on L2 teaching methodologies show the necessity of investigation. Long time, L2 teaching methodolgies were closely related to theories on L2 learning or Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Those theories became the most popular in World War II and the behaviouristic approach of the 1950's and 60's was influential and leading during a long period following. That is why this paper concentrates on the behaviouristic approach, considering B.F. Skinner especially. As other researchers found this approach insufficient, various studies have been initiated. They tried to find evidence for opposite theories or they enlarged and/or changed behaviourists views. The behaviourist approach still has some influence on L2 teaching today. However, modern investigations made clear that there is a need for distinction between L2 learning theories and teaching methodologies.

Walter and has been published by Channel View Publications this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book applies a psycholinguistic perspective to instructed second language acquisition, seeking to bridge the gap between second language acquisition research and language teaching practices. It challenges the traditional divide between conscious and unconscious processes, or explicit and implicit learning, and re-envisions this as a continuum of the varying levels of consciousness which can be applied by learners to different language behaviors in the second language classroom. It applies this model to learner development and the classroom context, discussing pedagogical applications for instructors at all levels. This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in second language acquisition, psycholinguistics and language pedagogy. The accessible discussion of research findings, pedagogical approaches and classroom tasks and activities make this book particularly relevant for language teachers, providing the tools needed to apply second language acquisition research in their classroom.

This accessible textbook is the only introduction to linguistics in which each chapter is written by an expert who teaches courses on that topic, ensuring balanced and uniformly excellent coverage of the full range of modern linguistics. Assuming no prior knowledge the text offers a clear introduction to the traditional topics of structural linguistics (theories of sound, form, meaning, and language change), and in addition provides full coverage of contextual linguistics, including separate chapters on discourse, dialect variation, language and culture, and the politics of language. There are also up-to-date separate chapters on language and the brain, computational linguistics, writing, child language acquisition, and second-language learning. The breadth of the textbook makes it ideal for introductory courses on language and linguistics offered by departments of English, sociology, anthropology, and communications, as well as by linguistics departments.

Second Language Acquisition - Learning Theories and Recent Approaches will aim to present the process of learning an additional language apart from one’s native language. The process of understanding, writing, and speaking another language with fluency involves complex intellectual and emotional responses as well as continuous information processing abilities. A variety of perspectives is needed in order for learning to take place. Many factors, both internal and external, are involved in determining why some learn a second language at a faster rate than others. With an internal or external focus of attention, various linguistic techniques have explored the basic questions about SLA. With the ability to covey and structure information in a second language, there is a need for what is being learned to be viewed from various perspectives. The focus on continuous natural UG capability for language learning versus communicative processing requirements differs among viewpoints on how SLA develops. This book intends to provide readers with language acquisition, language comprehension, language development, language processing, and psychological and social variables, which have been largely excluded by purely language approaches.
