Virtual exchanges provide language learners with a unique opportunity to develop their target language skills, support inter-cultural exchange, and afford teacher candidates space to hone their teaching craft. The research presented in this volume investigates the role of virtual exchanges as both a teaching tool to support second language acquisition and a space for second language development. Practitioners obtain guidance on the different types of exchanges that currently exist and on the outcome of those exchanges so that they can make informed decisions on whether to include this type of program in their language teaching and learning classrooms. To this end, this edited volume contains chapters that describe individual virtual exchanges along with results of research done on each exchange to show how the exchange supported specific second language teaching and learning goals.

Virtual exchange refers to education programmes in which constructive communication and interaction takes place between individuals or groups from different cultural backgrounds with the support of educators or facilitators. Evaluating and Upscaling Telecollaborative Teacher Education (EVALUATE, http://www.evaluateproject.eu/) was a European policy experimentation financed by Erasmus+ which studied the impact of a telecollaborative model of virtual exchange on student teachers. Between 2017-2018, the project consortium trained teacher trainers and organised virtual exchanges which involved over 1,000 student teachers at initial teacher education institutions. This entailed students interacting and collaborating with partner classes from other countries as an integral part of one of their courses. The research team then analysed the learning gains from these exchanges using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. They also worked with representatives from European ministries of education to understand how virtual exchange could be upscaled in teacher education across Europe. This publication presents the findings of the EVALUATE experimentation and its implications for the education of future teachers. The study found that engaging student teachers in structured online intercultural collaboration as part of their formal learning can contribute to the development of their digital-pedagogical, intercultural, and foreign language competences. It can also lead to innovation and international learning in the education of future teachers.

Project Based Language Learning And Call written by Michael Thomas and has been published by Equinox Publishing (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Education categories.
This book is the first substantive scholarly book on project-based and cross-curricular language learning using digital technologies. The book includes new empirical research on project-based language learning utilizing CALL technologies and conceptual and theoretical chapters that address new methodological approaches for researching project-based and cross-curricular language learning in digitally-mediated learning environments. This dual focus distinguishes the volume from previous books on project-based learning in which digital technologies have not been the main focus. CALL research involving a variety of languages is also offered. The book is timely in that, inspired by OECD reports and curriculum reforms in several countries, a repositioning and re-evaluation of foreign language education in school-based education has been taking place in which foreign language learning is taught in a multi-disciplinary approach involving an emphasis on collaborative literacies, including problem-solving, civic engagement, social justice and telecollaboration. In this mix, language learning, particularly driven by developments in CLIL (content and integrated language learning), is being taught as one of several disciplines in a way that firmly emphasizes communication and creativity rather than a traditional functional approach.

This collection offers a comprehensive account of the development of intercultural communication strategies through Virtual English as a lingua franca, reflecting on the ways in which we make pragmatic meaning in today’s technology-informed globalized world. The volume places an emphasis on analyzing transmodal, trans-semiotic, and transcultural discourse practices in online spaces, providing a counterpoint to existing ELF research which has leaned towards unpacking formal features of ELF communication in face-to-face interactions. The chapters explore how these practices are characterized and then further sustained via non-verbal semiotic resources, drawing on data from a global range of empirical studies. The book prompts further reflection on readers’ own experiences in online settings and the challenges of VELF while also supplying educators in these contexts with the analytical resources to better bridge the gap between formal and informal learning. Highlighting the dynamic complexity of online intercultural communication in the twenty-first century, this book is a valuable resource for students and scholars in applied linguistics, language education, digital communication, and intercultural communication.

Critical language pedagogy (CLP) redefines language education by integrating critical theory and social justice perspectives, aiming to foster critical thinking, social awareness, and empowerment. It emerged from the understanding that language and power are intertwined, emphasizing the need for teaching that goes beyond linguistic proficiency. By applying critical theory, CLP challenges power structures, social inequities, and cultural norms that shape language use, encouraging reflective practices and liberatory education. It promotes social justice by addressing linguistic inequalities and advocating for inclusivity in language education. Further research into CLP may empower learners to critically engage with language in the context of broader societal issues, questioning and transforming societal norms. Redefining Language Education Through Critical Language Pedagogy explores multiple areas of CLP, including theoretical foundations of critical language teaching, strategies and guidelines for integrating CLP into the language classroom, and practical examples of how to integrate socially and culturally relevant topics in the teaching process to promote CLP. It examines various linguistic inequalities, offering strategies for inclusive and accessible language education. This book covers topics such as higher education, social justice, and sustainable development, and is a useful resource for educators, academicians, linguists, sociologists, and researchers.
