Byzantine intellectuals not only had direct access to Neoplatonic sources in the original language but also, at times, showed a particular interest in them. During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. The papers assembled in this volume discuss a number of specific questions and concerns that drew the interest of Byzantine scholars in different periods towards Neoplatonic sources in an attempt to identify and explore the central issues in the reception of Neoplatonic texts during the Byzantine era. This is the first volume of the sub-series "Byzantinisches Archiv - Series Philosophica", which will be dedicated to the rapidly growing field of research in Byzantine philosophical texts.

In September 2002, the University of Coimbra hosted, for the first time, a conference of the Réseau Thématique Plutarque, a research network created by several European universities in order to promote regular annual meetings of junior and senior scholars who share a common interest in Plutarch's work. The Coimbra meeting of 2002 was devoted to the fragments of Plutarch, and the results of that event were published one year later, in a volume edited by José Ribeiro Ferreira and Delfim Leão, under the title Os fragmentos de Plutarco e a recepção da sua obra (Coimbra, 2003). During the following years, many other universities organized conferences of the Réseau on a rotating basis, until the event came back to Coimbra, where the Portuguese section of the International Plutarch Society (SoPlutarco) hosted, from 16 to 18 June 2011, the twelfth meeting of the network, devoted this time to the subject "Nomos, kosmos and dike in Plutarch". The present volume comprises most of the contributions presented during the Coimbra meeting, after having been submitted to a process of revision, which involved the direct collaboration of the several regional sections of the Réseau. Although the volume kept the multilingual diversity of the participants in the conference, its structuring elements were composed in English, in order to reinforce the coherence of the book and to enlarge the number of potential readers.

L’autore, Jean-Baptiste Pérès, un erudito bibliotecario, dimostrava come l’imperatore dei francesi non fosse mai comparso sulla faccia della terra. La sua storia, spedizione in Russia e Waterloo compresi, risultava essere nient’altro che la trasposizione di un mito solare. Circa un secolo prima, il filosofo irlandese Berkeley era riuscito a fare di più. Riducendo la realtà a immagine del nostro spirito, aveva dimostrato la non esistenza del mondo intero. E tanto convincente dovette essere da ricavarne una nomina a vescovo e una cattedra all’università di Oxford. Va ricordato pure che l’immaterialità del pianeta non gli impedì di fondare una colonia nel nuovo continente sovvenzionata col lavoro degli schiavi delle piantagioni. Secondo questo autore, sono le conclusioni di Voltaire, diecimila uomini uccisi a colpi di cannone non sono nient’altro che diecimila impressioni del nostro spirito. Sono questi due degli esempi più notevoli di paradossi che insieme agli arcinoti esempi di Zenone non hanno giovato alla reputazione del genere, trasformandolo col tempo in sinonimo di sofisma o stramberia. Al tempo dei primi sofisti, tuttavia, il paradosso ha un connotato positivo, è abilità dialettica, capacità di convincere. La sua cattiva fama prende piede quando si inoltra in campi come l’etica e la religione che per loro natura mal sopportano di essere sottoposte a indagine razionale. I libri di Protagora vengono bruciati nella pubblica piazza di Atene non perché l’autore si sia reso colpevole di ragionamenti paradossali, quanto piuttosto perché tali ragionamenti ha provato a estendere alla religione, affermando di non poter sostenere né che gli dei sono, né che non sono. Nel momento in cui la ragione prende a occuparsi della divinità diventa fatalmente blasfema, così come nel momento in cui si occupa dell’autorità finisce col risultare irriverente." The theme of suicide was of paramount importance in Italy in the long nineteenth century, from the French revolution to the outbreak of World War I. A number of writers, intellectuals, politicians, and artists wrote about suicide, and a very high number of people killed themselves, for several reasons.
