In Secular Discourse on Sin in the Anthropocene: What’s Wrong with the World, Ernst M. Conradieutilizes a notion of social diagnostics to explore not only the surface-level symptoms of ecological destruction, but also its ultimate causes. Conradie uses two toolkits to review secular literature on the Anthropocene, namely the prophetic and pastoral vocabulary of Christian sin-talk and the theological critique against apartheid in South Africa. Various layers of the underlying problem are uncovered on this bases, including unsustainable “habits of the heart,” structural violence, the ideologies of unlimited economic growth and humanism, quasi-soteriologies such as climate engineering, idolatries such as self-divinization, and heresy. Conradie offers authentic discourse on the Anthropocene from the perspective of the global South, and includes a theological postscript to posit tentative suggestions as to what God may have in store for humanity in this time. Scholars of theology, environmental studies, and history will find this book particularly useful.

This book presents a vision for Glocal Theological Education, an invitation to rethink and reshape theological training in times of crisis. The aim is to train theological judicium, the ability to exercise sound judgment and practice discernment in the face of the different crises in the world of today—like the climate crisis, the changed role of the church, and the challenge of youth citizenship. It explores what has been learned from developing shared, global learning within the framework of local learning communities in Norway, South Africa, and beyond. The book also discusses key practices, such as the combination of coteaching online and learning in local contexts, and best-practice research on other educational activities. Contributors also reflect more theoretically on where, how, and what we can learn from crisis, and how these theoretical insights can help us shape theological leaders for the future who can read the times.

This monograph may be read as a constructive supplement to Volume 4 of the series entitled An Earthed Faith: Telling the Story amid the “Anthropocene.” Volume 4 of this series is on the Christian doctrine of providence and is entitled Making Room for the Story to Continue? In addition to an extended introduction (on the state of the debate in the field), this monograph includes three constructive essays on the doctrine of providence, employing the traditional Reformed distinction between conservatio, gubernatio and concursus as aspects of God’s providence, as well as a concluding essay provocatively entitled “Who Cares a Damn?” The argument of this contribution may be captured in the following way: 1. That God’s providence is best understood in terms of the deeply held Christian conviction that God cares for every creature—and not in terms of Greek assumptions around a pervading rational world order 2. That conservatio and gubernatio have found rough secular equivalents in global debates on sustainability, mitigation, and adaptation in the context of climate change 3. That conservatio and gubernatio are typically in tension with each other when it comes to the question whether God maintains order in nature and society or whether God transforms unjust orders (the call for ecojustice) 4. That concursus is not only an implication of conservatio and gubernatio but also captures the heart of the problem posed by the advent of the “Anthropocene,” namely that (some) humans have become a “geological force of nature,” while God’s agency has become sidelined or usurped by the Promethean quest to become divine. In each of these essays, a highly constructive contribution is offered that advances the debate in eco-theology by placing providence in the context of the shift from the Holocene to the “Anthropocene.” The method adopted is a constructive argument based on a critical review of the available literature. This monograph is scholarly and is addressed to other scholars in the fields of eco-theology, systematic theology, and Reformed theology.

This first volume in the proposed series will address some preliminary issues that are typical of a 'prolegomena' in any systematic theology. It will focus on the following question: 'How does the story of who the Triune God is and what this God does relate to the story of life on Earth?' Or: 'Is the Christian story part of the earth’s story or is the earth’s story part of God’s story, from creation to consummation?' This raises many issues on the relatedness of religion and theology, the place of theology in multi-disciplinary collaboration, the notion of revelation, the possibility of knowledge of God, the interplay between convictions and narrative accounts, hermeneutics, the difference between natural theology and a theology of nature, and the role of science vis-à-vis indigenous worldviews.

This book is the third in a series titled An Earthed Faith: Telling the Story Amid the Anthropocene. The series aims to offer collaborative, constructive contributions to understanding the content and significance of the Christian faith from the perspective of Christian ecotheology, given the challenges associated with the Anthropocene. The focus of this volume is on creation theology. The book addresses the following question: “What difference does it make to the story of cosmic, planetary, human, and cultural evolution to re-describe this as the creative work of God’s love? Inversely, what difference does it make to the story of God’s love to describe it in evolutionary terms?” The ten contributors were selected in order to optimize a diversity of positions in terms of geographical context, confessional traditions, and theological schools while also taking considerations of gender, race, age, and language into account.

African Perspectives On Religion And Climate Change written by Ezra Chitando and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-12 with Religion categories.
This book interrogates the contributions that religious traditions have made to climate change discussions within Africa, whether positive or negative. Drawing on a range of African contexts and religious traditions, the book provides concrete suggestions on how individuals and communities of faith must act in order to address the challenge of climate change. Despite the fact that Africa has contributed relatively little to historic carbon emissions, the continent will be affected disproportionally by the increasing impact of anthropogenic climate change. Contributors to this book provide a range of rich case studies to investigate how religious traditions such as Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and indigenous faiths influence the worldviews and actions of their adherents. The chapters also interrogate how the moral authority and leadership provided by religion can be used to respond and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Topics covered include risk reduction and resilience, youth movements, indigenous knowledge systems, environmental degradation, gender perspectives, ecological theories, and climate change financing. This book will be of interest to scholars in diverse fields, including religious studies, sociology, political science, climate change and environmental humanities. It may also benefit practitioners involved in solving community challenges related to climate change. This second volume in the series on "An Earthed Faith" will address the following question: "Given what we know about the Anthropocene, how does one even begin to answer the question: What is this God up to, and how ought humans respond?” This is a question of theological method, including the sources and interlocutors of Christian theology, its aims and starting points, social theories shaping it, and presuppositions grounding it. Addressing this question is the classic task of doing contextual theology, namely describing and analysing a particular context and considering how this context may best be addressed theologically and practically. The question highlights the need for prophetic theology to discern the “signs of the time”, to recognise a “moment of truth” (Kairos) and to discern counter-movements of the Spirit. The question of method opens the door to constructive critique of how theology has been done and should be done.

Racialized Health, COVID-19, and Religious Responses: Black Atlantic Contexts and Perspectives explores black religious responses to black health concerns amidst persistent race-based health disparities and healthcare inequities. This cutting-edge edited volume provides theoretically and descriptively rich analysis of cases and contexts where race factors strongly in black health outcomes and dynamics, viewing these matters from various disciplinary and national vantage points. The volume is divided into the following four parts: Systemic and Socio-Cultural Dimensions of Black Health Ecclesial Responses to Black Health Vulnerabilities Public Education and Policy Considerations Spirituality and the Wellness of Black Minds, Bodies and Souls Part I explores ways social and cultural factors such as racial bias, religious conviction, and resource capacity have influenced and delimited black health prospects. Part II looks historically and contemporarily at denominational and ecumenical responses to collective black health emergencies in places such as Nigeria, the UK, the US, and the Caribbean. Part III focuses on public advocacy, particularly collective black health, both in terms of policy and education. The final section deals with spiritual, psychological, and theological dimensions, understandings, and pursuits of black health and wholeness. Collectively, the essays in the volume delineate analysis and action that wrestle with the multidimensional nature of black wellness and with ways broad public resources and black religious resources should be mobilized and leveraged to ensure collective black wellness. Tuvalu Theology And The Geopolitics Of Climate Change written by Maina Vakafua Talia and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-18 with Religion categories.
This book examines the threat posed by climate change to the low-lying islands of Tuvalu through a lens of what it means to be a neighbour. Those who live on Tuvalu are among the most vulnerable in the world to threats of rising sea levels and global climate change. Their carbon emissions are miniscule and they are ‘weak actors’ in terms of the geopolitics of climate change. The task in Tuvalu is to take seriously the prospect of the submergence of islands and the potential for cultural extinction. This prospect raises a network of interconnected questions to do with the rights of climate displaced persons and sovereignty over lands lost to climate change. In this volume, the author draws upon Indigenous knowledge, the ethics of climate justice, insights from climate science and familiarity with discourses surrounding the Anthropocene to explore the implications of the parable of the Good Samaritan. The rhetoric of the question ‘am I not your tuakoi (neighbour)?’ inserts a theological and moral dimension into the complex politics of climate change. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of theology, ethics, ecology and environment, as well as those working in Pacific studies, development studies, and politics.
