Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book. The third edition of The Geography of Transport Systems has been revised and updated to provide an overview of the spatial aspects of transportation. This text provides greater discussion of security, energy, green logistics, as well as new and updated case studies, a revised content structure, and new figures. Each chapter covers a specific conceptual dimension including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts. A final chapter contains core methodologies linked with transport geography such as accessibility, spatial interactions, graph theory and Geographic Information Systems for transportation (GIS-T). This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field, with a broad overview of its concepts, methods, and areas of application. The accompanying website for this text contains a useful additional material, including digital maps, PowerPoint slides, databases, and links to further reading and websites. The website can be accessed at: http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans This text is an essential resource for undergraduates studying transport geography, as well as those interest in economic and urban geography, transport planning and engineering.

Introduction To Transportation Security written by Frances L. Edwards and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-26 with Business & Economics categories.

Transportation is the lifeline of any nation, connecting people, supporting the economy, and facilitating the delivery of vital goods and services. The 9/11 attacks—and other attacks on surface transportation assets, including the bombings in Madrid, London, Moscow, and Mumbai—demonstrate the vulnerability of the open systems to disruption and the consequences of the attacks on people, property, and the economy. Now more than ever, it has become imperative for businesses operating in the transportation and transit sectors to develop comprehensive security programs accounting for both natural and man-made hazards and safeguarding people, places, and equipment—while at the same time ensuring operations continuity. Providing transportation managers with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively manage the security of transportation assets, Introduction to Transportation Security examines: Basic theories of security and emergency management The integrated nature of the nation’s critical infrastructure and the threats to transportation in each surface mode Federal agencies working in emergency management and transportation security and their intelligence and response requirements and capabilities The types of disasters that have occurred in the U.S. and selected nations, and their significant economic impacts Cost-beneficial security strategies aimed at preventing catastrophic failures in each transportation mode Effective methods for organizing, testing, and evaluating transportation security across modes and professions The book covers all transportation modes and their interconnectivity—including highway, air cargo, freight and passenger rail, transit, and maritime. It presents learning objectives and discussion questions to test assimilation of the material and case studies to facilitate a practical understanding of the concepts. Introduction to Transportation Security provides essential information for students in transportation management programs and professionals charged with safeguarding the movement of assets within our interconnected transportation network.

Securing Integrated Transportation Networks provides a comprehensive look at multimodal transportation security—its dynamics, evolving threats and technology advances that enhance operational security and related infrastructure protection and hardening, as well as the regulatory environment. As threats are evolving, so is the technology used in enhancing transportation security, operational procedures, and regulations. This book will address this dynamic evolution of transportation security. This book serves as a primary reference for information on of the range of activities and components involved in transportation security. It covers the myriad moving parts involved in the relationship between and among logistics, the supply chains and transportation entities, and the concepts, approaches and methods that are being employed to effect greater security. It looks at operations, infrastructure, equipment, laws and regulations, policies and procedures, and risk focused on transportation safety and security by mode and transportation in general. Cooperation and partnering with and among the industry, to include transportation providers and government agencies, is the way forward to ensure that security is maintained and keeps pace with the evolving threat and regulatory landscape. This book benefits students in homeland security, supply chain management and transportation planning and engineering by providing a practical resource written by industry practitioners with "boots-on-the-ground" security experience and analysis of real-world case studies. In addition, it provides a practitioner-focused reference book for those in the transportation and supply chain industries, to include its government, associated industries, and academic partners. - Introduces readers to the characteristics of the motive power, freight or passage haulage units, physical infrastructure required, the operating environment itself and the information technology applicable to both operating and managing customer-provider relationships—all of which to foster safe, secure, effective, and efficient operations - Includes discussion questions and case studies available for assignments and subsequent classroom discussion, whereby real-world scenarios serve to hone analytical abilities - Discusses the risks and vulnerabilities that various supply chains and associated transportation modes may pose to the ability of a firm to maintain ongoing operations, helping them to analyze trade-offs and mitigate threats

U.S. transportation systems and the estimated 4,000 transportation facilities move over 30 million tons of freight and provide an estimated 1.1 billion passenger trips each day. Since 2001 the Transp. Security Admin. (TSA) has protected these systems and facilities from terrorist attack. One program TSA utilizes is the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program, through which a common credential is being developed for transportation workers with access to secure areas. Ultimately planned for all transportation sectors, TSA is initially focusing the TWIC program on the maritime sector. This testimony discusses: the progress made in implementing the TWIC program; and some of the remaining program challenges.
