Scientific Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Computer Science - IT-Security, language: English, abstract: This paper gives practical guidance on the provision of security measures for proper operation of next generation networks (NGNs) and protection of the users' proper use of the telecommunications services. It should be observed by all the operators, which operate NGNs (facility based operators) or provide services with the use of (NGN) provided by others (service based operators). In addition to the security measures, the operators should follow the triggering criteria and reporting procedures set out in this document for reporting security violations. Also in this paper we concern about different security vulnerabilities found in existing system and gives possible solutions to eliminate them. These vulnerabilities are the possibilities to forge key messages, unauthenticated messages and Man In the Middle attack. We proposed a secure key generation process, random number and function generation process to eliminate these vulnerabilities.

Starting from voice services with simple terminals, a mobile device today is nothing short of a small PC in the form of smart-phones. The result has been a huge increase in data-services, giving mobile communication access to critical aspects of human life. This has led to the standardization of System Architecture Evolution/Long Term Evolution (SAE/LTE) by 3GPP and IEEE 802.16e / WiMAX. Together with penetration of mobile communications and new standardization come new security issues and, thus, the need for new security solutions. Security in Next Generation Mobile Networks provides a fresh look at those security aspects with the main focus on the latest security developments in 3GPP SAE/LTE and WiMAX. SAE/LTE is also known as Evolved Packet System (EPS). This book includes six chapters, the first three serving as introductory text, and the remaining three providing more in-depth discussions. Chapter One gives a background of Next Generation Mobile Networks (NGMN) activity and requirements. Following this explanation, Chapter Two provides an overview of security, telecommunication systems, and their requirements, and Chapter Three provides some background on standardization. Chapter Four discusses the EPS (or SAE/LTE) security architecture developed by 3GPP. In particular, this chapter covers the authentication and key agreement method for SAE/LTE together with newly defined key hierarchy. This chapter also addresses the challenging aspects of SAE/LTE interworking and mobility with UMTS together with the necessary key-exchange technologies. Chapter Five provides an in-depth discussion of the WiMAX security requirements, the authentication aspects of PKMv2, and the overall WiMAX network security aspects. In Chapter Six, the text briefly covers security for: -Home(evolved)NodeB, which is the Femto solution from 3GPP -Machine-to-Machine (M2M) -Multimedia Broadcast and Multicast Service (MBMS) and Group Key Management. The intended audience for this book is mobile network and device architects, designers, researchers, and students. The goal of the authors, who have a combined experience of more than 25 years in mobile security standardization, architecture, research, and education, is to provide readers with a fresh, up-to-date look at the architecture and challenges of EPS and WiMAX security.

Comprehensive coverage explaining the correlation and synergy between Next Generation Networks and the existing standardized technologies This book focuses on Next Generation Networks (NGN); in particular, on NGN architectures, protocols and services, including technologies, regulation and business aspects. NGN provides convergence between the traditional telecommunications and the Internet, and it is globally standardized by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), where ITU is the United Nations specialized agency for Information and Communication Technologies – ICTs. The convergence towards the NGN is based on the Internet technologies, and the introductory chapters cover the Internet fundamentals of today, including architectures, protocols (IPv4, IPv6, TCP, DNS, etc.), Internet services (WWW, e-mail, BitTorrent, Skype, and more), as well as Internet governance. Further, the prerequisite for convergence of all ICT services over single network architectures is broadband access to the Internet. Hence, the book includes architectures of fixed broadband Internet access networks, such as DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) networks, cable networks, FTTH (Fiber To The Home), next generation passive and active optical networks, and metro Ethernet. It also covers network architectures for next generation (4G) mobile and wireless networks (LTE/LTE-Advanced, and Mobile WiMAX 2.0), then Fixed Mobile Convergence - FMC, next generation mobile services, as well as business and regulatory aspects for next generation mobile networks and services. Comprehensive coverage explaining the correlation and synergy between Next Generation Networks and the existing standardized technologies Focuses on Next Generation Networks (NGN) as defined by the ITU, including performance, service architectures and mechanisms, common IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), control and signalling protocols used in NGN, security approaches, identity management, NGN Service Overlay Networks, and NGN business models Examines the most important NGN services, including QoS-enabled VoIP, IPTV over NGN, web services in NGN, peer-to-peer services, Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) services, VPN services in NGN, Internet of things and web of things Includes the transition towards NGN from the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Networks) and from the best-effort Internet via the same Internet access Explores advanced topics such as IPv6-based NGN, network virtualization, and future packet based networks, as well as business challenges and opportunities for the NGN evolved networks and services Essential reading for engineers and employees from regulatory bodies, government organisations, telecommunication companies, ICT companies.
