This volume on continental margin sedimentation brings together an expert editorial and contributor team to create a state-of-the-art resource. Taking a global perspective, the book spans a range of timescales and content, ranging from how oceans transport particles, to how thick rock sequences are formed on continental margins. Summarizes and integrates our understanding of sedimentary processes and strata associated with fluvial dispersal systems on continental shelves and slopes Explores timescales ranging from particle transport at one extreme, to deep burial at the other Insights are presented for margins in general, and with focus on a tectonically active margin (northern California) and a passive margin (New Jersey), enabling detailed examination of the intricate relationships between a wide suite of sedimentary processes and their preserved stratigraphy Includes observational studies which document the processes and strata found on particular margins, in addition to numerical models and laboratory experimentation, which provide a quantitative basis for extrapolation in time and space of insights about continental-margin sedimentation Provides a research resource for scientists studying modern and ancient margins, and an educational text for advanced students in sedimentology and stratigraphy

'the volume contains original and stimulating contributions to quantitative biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy by four authors who are foremost in this branch of science and have pioneered its application. I agree with this assessment; the book is clearly the place to start for those interested in becoming conversant with modern techniques of stratigraphy analysis.' The stratigraphic record is the primary archive of Earth’s past surface processes. Stratigraphic architectures in clastic sedimentary systems are fundamentally a response to geometries and kinematics of sedimentary surfaces during times of active sedimentation and erosion. My overarching research goals in this dissertation revolve around developing models for quantitative reconstruction of surface process conditions from stratigraphic archives. This dissertation specifically addresses individual components of forward and inverse model approaches for two stratigraphic problems. The first component of this dissertation focuses on determining controls on preservation of shoreline trajectories in deltaic stratigraphy, using geometry and kinematics of delta surfaces. This component also describes stratigraphic completeness of two-dimensional trajectories of delta shorelines in comparison to one-dimensional stratigraphic column completeness. This study provides novel conceptual insights into the dimensional dependence of stratigraphic completeness. The second component of this dissertation focuses on developing a series of forward models between the dynamics of fluvial sediment transport and the kinematics of bed forms in sand bed rivers using both theoretical and empirical relationships. The third component presents an inverse model for determining bed load sediment transport rates from remotely sensed data, as well as from fluvial deposits. This inverse model combines previously published models with an empirical model for reach slope correlated bed form velocity presented in the second part of the dissertation. The fourth component focuses on combining forward models relating sediment hydrodynamics, kinematics of bed forms, and curvature of cross set bounding surfaces in order to approach an inverse model for extracting flow and sediment dynamics from bed form cross strata. This final component employs a large amount of new and compiled data to both evaluate the validity of proposed forward models and develop a stratigraphic inverse solution.

Over the past 20 years there has been a major growth in efforts to quantify the geometry and dimensions of sediment bodies from analogues to provide quantitative input to geological models. The aim of this volume is to examine the current state of the art, from both an industry and an academic perspective. Contributions discuss the challenges of extracting relevant data from different types of sedimentary analogue (outcrop, process models, seismic) and the application and significance of such information for improving predictions from subsurface static and dynamic models. Special attention is given to modelling reservoir properties and gridding issues for predicting subsurface fluid flow. As such, the volume is expected to be of interest to both the geoscience community concerned with the fundamentals of sedimentary architecture as well as geological modellers and engineers interested in how these characteristics are modelled and influence subsurface predictions.
