This book is a pioneering attempt to explore the fascinating and hardly known realm of reciting poetry in medieval and Renaissance Italy. The study of more than 50 treatises on both music and poetry, as well as other literary sources and documents from the period between 1300 and 1600, highlights above all the practice of parlar cantando («speaking through singing» - the term found in De li contrasti, a fourteenth-century treatise on poetry) as rooted in the art of reciting verses. Situating the practice of parlar cantando in the context of late medieval poetic delivery, the author sheds new light on the origin and history of late Renaissance opera style, which their inventors called stile recitativo, rappresentativo or, exactly, parlar cantando. The deepest roots of the Italian tradition of parlar cantando are thus revealed, and the cultural background of the birth of opera is reinterpreted and revisited from the much broader perspective of what appears to be the most important Italian mode of music making between the age of Dante and Petrarch and the beginning of Italian opera around 1600.

Esistono molte specie di avvicinamenti al cuore dell’uomo e al confronto con Dio. Si è imposta per molto tempo una voce secca, dura, teologale e disincantata, che ha interrogato l’esistenza con parole squadrate come pietre angolari . C’è invece un uomo tra noi che da una vita parla con voce vibrante dal profondo, attenta ai palpiti del cuore, capace di dischiuderlo e di aprirlo a pulsazioni più vaste, a sentimenti assoluti. Quest’uomo è un parroco di città. I suoi moltissimi fedeli lo chiamano semplicemente «don Angelo». Incontrarlo significa esporsi a una rivoluzione potente, che agisce con delicatezza commossa attraverso parabole, racconti di vita, brevi illuminazioni, domande di abissale innocenza. La teologia del cuore praticata da don Angelo Casati non ha minore radicalità delle formulazioni dogmatiche e asettiche, e rappresenta l’attitudine alla scoperta continua, che si inoltra nel mistero dell’esistenza e nei sensi più nascosti della Scrittura e del Vangelo. È una pratica di dialogo persistente e in qualche modo scomoda, impegnativa, perché dice che forse essere cristiani e umani oggi significa chiamare le cose con un nome diverso: le facce divengono volti, la ressa si trasforma in incontri, il fastidio in occasione. Signifi ca leggere nei volti la storia di ciascuna persona, farsi parte di questa storia ed esserne riempiti. Significa anche rileggere in quei volti ciò che è scritto nella Bibbia e, viceversa, nella Bibbia incontrare i volti e i gesti di chi affolla gli autobus alla periferia delle grandi città. Don Angelo Casati ha dedicato la sua vita e le sue omelie al «farsi prossimo», come richiedeva ai cristiani il suo grande amico Carlo Maria Martini. La via scelta sembra poco rumorosa, poco gridata, ma è estremamente coraggiosa e proviene da lontano, dai primordi della comunità raccolta intorno al Cristo, giungendo a oggi nei gesti pontificali o in quelli di un curato assetato di umanità, umanità da scovare tra i parrocchiani così come tra i baraccati, tra chi chiede di non ricevere la benedizione natalizia così come tra le suore che scelgono di vivere ai margini. È qui, in questi «piccoli scampoli di cielo, tra casa e casa», che si avverte il presentimento di essere sfi orati dal mistero della creazione, dalla vertiginosa presenza di un Dio che sorride.
