This fourth volume of the Iconicity series is like its predecessors devoted to the study of iconicity in language and literature in all its forms. Many of the papers turn the notion of iconicity 'inside-out', some suggesting that 'less-is-more'; others focus on the cognitive factors 'inside' the brain that are important for the iconic phenomena that are produced in the 'outside' world. In addition this volume includes a paper related to iconicity in music and its interaction with language. Other papers range from the theoretical issues involved in the evolution of language, to those that offer many 'inside-out' claims, such as claiming that nouns are derived from pronouns, and as such should more properly be called 'pro-pronouns'. Also, this volume includes perhaps the first English-language analysis of the iconic aspects of sound symbolism in a prayer from the Koran. This is a truly interdisciplinary collection that should turn some of the notions of iconicity in language and literature 'outside-in' and 'inside-out'.

Erik Ronningen was on the 71st floor of the North Tower on September 11, 2001 when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building. After an incredible, near miraculous journey down through the acrid, smoke-filled building, Erik tried to get to the Security Command Center in the South Tower. Unable to do so, he was the last person to make it out of the South Tower alive. Here is the story of his harrowing escape interwoven with the accounts of fourteen others who were lucky enough to be able to recount them.Altogether, these accounts document the bravery and heroism, selflessness and generosity demonstrated by hundreds of people when their normal everyday lives were suddenly plunged into a fiery scramble for survival. The astonishing photograph on the cover of this book was taken by survivor Jim Usher as he lay on the concrete outside the WTC losing consciousness, so his family could see what he saw during what he thought were the last moments of his life. And yes, that flag was really there! This photograph has never before been made public.

Sipa - The man who followed the bees is an amazing, enchanting and deep tale of a man's life journey. Starting when Sipa turns 14 and follows him all the way to his 50th year. This short story takes you on the adventurous path of Sipa who seeks both earthly progress and spiritual development and who at crucial moments in his life is guided by the bees. Ann Macmillan says about it: "The genre of this book is reminiscent of those of the ‘Tales by Trees’ series. Christian’s story is tiny, but powerful in the telling; it could be read within the space of a train journey yet the images created through Sipa's journey will last much longer! The bees with whom Sipa connects as a young man, lead him through extraordinary life-experiences before finally seemingly to desert him. At that crucial moment Sipa understands what the Bees are telling him: that he is responsible now for creating his own next challenge which turns out to be the most herculean task of his life. Destiny allows him enough time to see the first seeds of his efforts germinate, and that's when he hears once again, the returning sound of his friends. . . This is an exceptional allegorical tale that I couldn't put down till it was finished--it will remain in my memory for a long time to come!" Here a short extract from Christian Gruetzmacher’s (honey-bee-lover-researcher and founder of the Bee-Observatory: bee-observatory.org) debut: "…. All along that lane there were thousands of flowers on the ground, the shrubs and bushes, and now within that abundance there were bees, bees everywhere, many more than usual. All sorts of bees! Big ones, small ones, furry ones, shiny ones - and they all seemed to be busier and louder than they usually were. Sipa liked that. He thought: “Maybe it’s a good sign!” So, he speeded up, walking very briskly along this forest lane, noticing all the time that the bees were always there, no matter how fast he walked - they were around him all the time! He took that as a clear sign and decided that he would follow the bees no matter where they would lead him, and he did - all day long!"

“For the sake of the world, we question. For the sake of the gospel, we examine. For the sake of the dignity of the image-bearers we serve—as well as ourselves—we inquire.” The evolution that has taken place in the world of mission over the last twenty-five years has left many Christians asking brutally honest questions about what we do and why we do it. Are we doing more damage than good? What does it look like to truly love and serve the marginalized in an authentic and effective way? What, actually, is the gospel and is it truly good news? In this groundbreaking book, Ryan Kuja vividly examines the world of Christian mission as few have seen it. With a beautiful balance of storytelling and theological reflection birthed from his own painful and powerful experiences on and off the field—from rural villages in South Sudan to major cities across Asia, Africa, and Latin America—Ryan guides us into global mission’s past and present, revealing where the light and hope lie, helping recover a missional future that will usher us into a new era. This is mission reimagined for a world recreated . . . from the inside out.
