From the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of North and South: The first in a saga about a German immigrant and his family’s rise in 20th-century America. The tide of the twentieth century is rising upon the world, and on its crest rides the Crown family. Young Pauli Kroner, freshly arrived in America from the streets of Berlin, makes his way to the mansion of his millionaire uncle in Chicago, looking to fulfill his dreams. His uncle, Joe Crown, is a self-made brewery tycoon who rules his domain with an iron hand—especially when it comes to his own family of defiantly rebellious children and a wife yearning for her own liberation. In this new world, Pauli will rise as his own man and find his destiny in the early days of motion pictures. Surrounded by relations close and distant, proud and vengeful, each struggling to find themselves at the dawn of a new era, he will witness and experience the violence of the Pullman Strike, and find love in the arms of a woman who can never be his as he follows the march of history, intertwined with such figures as the audacious Theodore Roosevelt, the ruthless Thomas Edison, the fading western icon Buffalo Bill, and many more. Named a New York Times Notable Book, Homeland is a “first-rate historical . . . chock-full of fascinating period detail, [Jakes’s] captivating story brings to life the sounds, smells and tastes of turn-of-the-century America in a manner comparable to Michener’s Hawaii and Doctorow’s Ragtime” (Publishers Weekly). This ebook features an illustrated biography of John Jakes including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

Home. It is the place we all long to be, yet in today's fragmented society, the concept of home is elusive for many people. In his new book, Longing for a Homeland, Lynn Anderson traces the wanderings and homesickness of the human race and the irresistible urge to find a place called "home." It is the story of a journey toward fulfillment -- a search to fill the God-shaped hole inside -- that ends only when we discover that home is not a building, a geographical location, or a people -- it is the love, security, and rest that can only be found in the presence of God. Join Anderson on the journey of a lifetime -- a journey to the very heart of God -- and experience the peace and joy that can found there. Come home -- your life will never be the same.

Investing In The Homeland written by Benjamin A.T. Graham and has been published by University of Michigan Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-23 with Political Science categories.

Once viewed as a “brain drain,” migrants are increasingly viewed as a resource for promoting economic development back in their home countries. In Investing in the Homeland, Benjamin Graham finds that diasporans—migrants and their descendants—play a critical role in linking foreign firms to social networks in developing countries, allowing firms to flourish even in challenging political environments most foreign investors shun. Graham’s analysis draws on new data from face-to-face interviews with the managers of over 450 foreign firms operating in two developing countries: Georgia and the Philippines. Diaspora-owned and diaspora-managed firms are better connected than other foreign firms and they use social ties to resolve disputes and influence government policy. At the same time, Graham shows that diaspora-affiliated firms are no more socially responsible than their purely foreign peers—at root, they are profit-seeking enterprises, not development NGOs. Graham identifies implications for policymakers seeking to capture the development potential of diaspora investment and for managers of multinational firms who want to harness diasporans as a source of sustained competitive advantage.

New edition, prepared with a bio-bibliographical account of Hehn and a survay of the research into Indo-European prehistory by James P. Mallory. It was Hehn who for the first time combined the tools of comparative linguistics and the direct historical approach in order to discover the origins of domesticated animals and cultivated plants in the ancient world, tracing their diffusion from one culture to another. Hehn abandoned his contemporaries'often idealized and nationalistic image of the ancient Indo-Europeans, seeking instead to reconstruct early Indo-European society in agreement with the ethnological research of his day.

A NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST AND ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR 'I read it in a fever, swept up in the kind of rapture you fall into when your most audacious friend kicks off on a hilarious, outrageous, but deeply sincere rant' Torrey Peters, Guardian Books of the Summer 'A beautiful novel about an American son and his immigrant father that has echoes of THE GREAT GATSBY' New York Times A deeply personal novel of identity and belonging in a nation coming apart at the seams, HOMELAND ELEGIES blends fact and fiction to tell an epic story of belonging and dispossession in the world that 9/11 made. Part family drama, part satire, part picaresque, at its heart it is the story of a father and son, and the country they call home. Ranging from the heartland towns of America to palatial suites in Europe to guerrilla lookouts in the mountains of Afghanistan, Akhtar forges a narrative voice that is original as it is exuberantly entertaining. This is a world in which debt has ruined countless lives and the gods of finance rule, where immigrants live in fear and the unhealed wounds of 9/11 continue to wreak havoc. HOMELAND ELEGIES is a novel written in love and anger, which spares no one, least of all the author himself.

“The Kingdom of God” is a recurrent wording among the Christian circle, whether we sit in a church service or whether we read our Bible, we often come across that expression which Jesus repeated over and over during His Ministry. However, the sad truth is that most ‘Christians’ do not know much about The Kingdom of God. This book displays in a simple manner what The Kingdom is and what Jesus really meant to convey to the multitude every time He preached that message. In fact, the world and religions induce the masses to believe that Jesus brought to this earth another religion or cult. But His message sounds more like Politics rather than Religion; wouldn’t you think? Why is it that He never spoke a word as He was brought to the high priest for trial, yet when facing Pilate, He wiped off the blood from His face and confronted the governor? Could it be that He was first brought to the wrong Court? You will find in this book some remarkable revelation, dear reader, if you make it until the end. I pray you will be blessed by it.
