The central idea of organic architecture is that buildings should be responsive to place and society (northwesterners should see Alvar Aalto's library at Mt. Angel Abbey in Oregon), unlike the International Style typified by the work of Mies van der Rohe. This thrilling architectural reference documents the recent organic movement in Hungarian architecture. This is gorgeous work, if not without the dangers of embracing a canned nationalism. Lavishly illustrated with photos in bandw and color, as well as drawings and plans. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Nature Of Order The Phenomenon Of Life written by Christopher Alexander and has been published by Nature of Order this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Architecture categories.

In Book Oneof this four-volume work, Alexander describes a scientific view of the world in which all space-matter has perceptible degrees of life, and establishes this understanding of living structures as an intellectual basis for a new architecture. He identifies fifteen geometric properties which tend to accompany the presence of life in nature, and also in the buildings and cities we make. These properties are seen over and over in nature and in the cities and streets of the past, but they have almost disappeared in the impersonal developments and buildings of the last hundred years. This book shows that living structures depend on features which make a close connection with the human self, and that only living structure has the capacity to support human well-being.

"The relationship between contemporary architecture and nature is fundamental to today's creativity. Some architects reject nature or imagine that they can create an artificial world of their own - while others are seeking new ways, aided by science and the computer, to chart new directions for the buildings of tomorrow. From ecologically-oriented designs to the most astonishing new forms, this book shows how essential nature remains to architecture."--BOOK JACKET.

Applying Properties of Animals Skins to Inspire Architectural Envelopes Biology influences design projects in many ways; the related discipline is known as biomimetics or biomimicry. Using the animal kingdom as a source of inspiration, Ilaria Mazzoleni seeks to instill a shift in thinking about the application of biological principles to design and architecture. She focuses on the analysis of how organisms have adapted to different environments and translates the learned principles into the built environment. To illustrate the methodology, Mazzoleni draws inspiration from the diversity of animal coverings, referred to broadly as skin, and applies them to the design of building envelopes through a series of twelve case studies. Skin is a complex organ that performs a multitude of functions; namely, it serves as a link between the body and the environment. Similarly, building envelopes act as interfaces between their inhabitants and external elements. The resulting architectural designs illustrate an integrative methodology that allows architecture to follow nature. "Ilaria Mazzoleni, in collaboration with biologist Shauna Price, has developed a profound methodology for architectural and design incentives that anticipates and proposes novel ways to explore undiscovered biological inspirations for various audiences." —Yoseph Bar-Cohen

The Geometry Of Natural Structure written by Robert Williams and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-01 with Design categories.

First published by the McDonnell-Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories in 1969 with the title, Handbook of Structure, Research Communication 75, it became the most requested publication in the history of DARL. A significantly expanded version was published by Eudaemon Press in 1972 with the title Natural Structure: Toward a Form Language. The third edition appeared as a Dover Science Book Publication, titled, The Geometrical Foundation of Natural Structure beginning in 1979. In the forty years that The Geometry of Natural Structure has been available to the public, the work has continued to be a valuable resource tool for scientists, architects, and artists. The Geometry of Natural Structure is a comprehensive work on geometric form in space. A convenient and stimulating handbook for scientists and designers, it covers the regular and semi-regular polyhedra, their various symmetries, how they fit together to fill space, and other structural considerations. Beginning with an introduction that places geometric structure in its proper mathematical context, the author then presents a detailed description of the core geometric forms of natural structure: polygons, polyhedra, aggregations of spheres, and packings of polyhedra. Topics considered include: the inter-relationships among geometrical/ topological forms, the unit cell concept, Golden Section, surface area and volume relationships of polyhedra, sphere coverings, Euler's law, and polyhedra distortions. Mr. Williams concludes with a rewarding discussion of the methodologies by which forms can be generated: truncation, rotation-translation, augmentation-deletion, fistulation, and others. The many tables located through¬out the text are extremely valuable for reference.

New Organic Architecture written by David Pearson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Nature (Aesthetics) categories.

New Organic Architecture is a manifesto for building in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and kinder to the environment. It illuminates key themes of organic architects, their sources of inspiration, the roots and concepts behind the style, and the environmental challenges to be met. The organic approach to architecture has an illustrious history, from Celtic design, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, to the work of Antoni Gaud and Frank Lloyd Wright. Today there is a response to a new age of information and ecology; architects are seeking to change the relationship between buildings and the natural environment. In the first part of his book, David Pearson provides a history and assessment of organic architecture. The second part comprises statements from thirty architects from around the world whose work is based on natural or curvilinear forms rather than the straight-line geometrics of modernism. Each statement is accompanied by full-color illustrations of one or several of the architects' built projects.

Taking Shape written by Susannah Hagan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Architecture categories.

'Taking Shape' explores the evolution of scientific and academic theories that have resulted in the concept of sustainability. Susannah Hagan uses this as a basis to argue for developments in the future and argues that these theories are not 'just an intellectual and aesthetic regression' as they are often perceived to be. By focusing on the impact of the new theories of sustainable technology and new materials in architecture, Hagan moves the discourse and practice of environmental sustainability within architecture towards a greater degree of awareness of both its cultural significance and cultural potential. In short, it demonstrates the capacity of sustainable architecture to embrace cultural and technical innovation. Enables you to understand the evolution of the theoretical arguments behind sustainability Allows you to project into the future of sustainability technology rather than just examining the current situation Provides you with a valuable insight into the relationship between the physical and cultural context and architecture

"In January 2024, the World Meteorological Organization officially declared 2023 as the hottest year on record, highlighting the potential for this record to be surpassed yet again this year. It has been quite a long time since architecture has been mandated to consider sustainability to address the current crisis, akin to a disaster. In the special feature "Seeking answers from nature", C3 examines three houses that incorporate elements from nature to achieve the necessary conditions for eco-friendly architecture, thus advancing towards sustainability. The first part of this issue is the work of Heesoo Kwak’s architecture. Widely known for his collaborative works with top tier clients of the Korean Wave, his projects integrate the elements of program vs. facility, mass vs. volume, and structure with his signature concrete mass designs." -- Provided by publisher
