Aeeuraey in preoperative diagnosis has always been the basis of sueeess in urology. In the past deeade, major advanees have been made in diagnostie imaging of the kidney and genitourinary traet. Of the new reliable teehniques available, eeho graphy, radioisotope studies and eomputerized tomographie seanning are of the greatest importanee in the investigation of renal and urinary traet diseases. These new methods of investigation have led to a radical change in the attitude and prae tieal approach when evaluating a patient presenting with a urologie disorder. The teeh niques each yield information of a different type and in eonjunetion with classie ra diology must be used safely and with a logical sequenee in the investigation of a diag nostie problem. They have greatly inereased the available evidenee on whieh diag nosis is based and their use should diminish the number of false diagnoses and ul timately improve treatment. The applieations ofthese reeently developed diagnostie methods in urology are reviewed in this book, based on the main eontributions given by a wide range of experts in their field during the last Congress of the European Assoeiation ofUrology, held in Athens in 1980. Intravenous urography, the first and major step in urologie diagnosis, developed more than half a eentury ago, ean still be improved, as shown by the routine use of early nephrotomography with rapid injeetion.

Quinolone Antibacterials written by Jochen Kuhlmann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-12 with Medical categories.

It has been over 30 years since the first clinically important member of the quinolone class, nalidixic acid, was introduced into medical practice. The modification produced in the quinolone nucleus by introducing a fluorine at the 6-position led to the discovery of the newer fluoroquinolones with enhanced antibacterial activities as compared to nalidixic acid. By now a great deal of preclinical and clinical experience has been obtained with these agents. The intense interest in this class of antibacterial agents by chemists, micro biologists, toxicologists, pharmacologists, clinical pharmacologists, and clini cians in various disciplines encouraged us to summarize the information on the history, chemistry, mode of action and in vitro properties, kinetics and efficacy in animals, mechanisms of resistance, toxicity, clinical pharmacology, clinical experience, and future prospects in one volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. As this series deals predominantly with "experimental" characteristics of drugs, our volume is dedicated specifically to quinolones and emphasizes principally their preclinical and clinical phar macological characteristics, despite the existence of several summaries on quinolones. The chemistry of the quinolones is described in detail. The chapter on the mode of action of quinolones reports the conclusive evidence that gyrase is the intracellular target of the quinolones; however, another enzyme, topoisomerase IV, may also be a target for quinolones, and the exact mechanisms by which quinolones act bactericidally are far from being understood.

Biomechanics Of Feeding In Vertebrates written by V.L. Bels and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

Although feeding is not yet been thoroughly studied in many vertebrates taxa, and different conceptual and methodological approaches of the concerned scientists make a synthesis difficult, the aim of the editors is to provide a comprehensive overview of the feeding design in aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates with a detailed description of its functional properties. The book emphasizes the constant interaction between function and form, behaviour and morphology in the course of evolution of the feeding apparatus and way of feeding both complementary and basically related to survival interspecific competition, adaptation to environmental changes and adaptive radiations. Special stress is drawn onquantification of the observational and experimental data on the morphology and biomechanics of the feeding design and its element jaws, teeth, hyoidean apparatus, tongue, in order to allow present and further comparisons in an evolutionary perspective.

Cortical Development written by Christine F. Hohmann and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

The cerebral neo cortex, unique to mammals, is regarded as the prerequisite for higher cognitive function and is the structure most closely associated with the idea of the "mind" . Expansion of mental capa city between mammals is most typically associated with an evolutionary increase in neocortical volume that culminates in the intricately folded configuration of sulci and gyri so charac teristic of the primate cerebral cortex. Yet, the basic unit structure and funda mental connectivity of cortex appears to have been preserved from the smooth cortex of the mouse or rat to the highly convoluted cortical mantle of the human that, if stretched out as a sheet, would be large enough to wrap the entire human brain multiple times. The basic similarity in structure and func tion has made it possible to conduct studies in the relatively simple cortices of rat or mouse and have the results pertain to the understanding of the primate, including human, cortex. The neo cortex is an intriguing structure for the study of cell differentiation. Its dozens of neuronal cell types and small handful of different glial types have their origin in a pseudostratified germinal epithelium lining the ventricular surface of the forebrain. In its mature form, neocortex is a six-Iayered struc ture; five of its layers contain multiple different but characteristic neuronal types with the sixth occupied by neuronal processes. Various glial cells are dis persed throughout all six layers.

Adaptive Control Of Ill Defined Systems written by Oliver G. Selfridge and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Business & Economics categories.

There are some types of complex systems that are built like clockwork, with well-defined parts that interact in well-defined ways, so that the action of the whole can be precisely analyzed and anticipated with accuracy and precision. Some systems are not themselves so well-defined, but they can be modeled in ways that are like trained pilots in well-built planes, or electrolyte balance in healthy humans. But there are many systems for which that is not true; and among them are many whose understanding and control we would value. For example, the model for the trained pilot above fails exactly where the pilot is being most human; that is, where he is exercising the highest levels of judgment, or where he is learning and adapting to new conditions. Again, sometimes the kinds of complexity do not lead to easily analyzable models at all; here we might include most economic systems, in all forms of societies. There are several factors that seem to contribute to systems being hard to model, understand, or control. The human participants may act in ways that are so variable or so rich or so interactive that the only adequate model of the system would be the entire system itself, so to speak. This is probably the case in true long term systems involving people learning and growing up in a changing society.

Computational Intelligence written by Christine L. Mumford and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-29 with Computers categories.

This book is about synergy in computational intelligence (CI). It is a c- lection of chapters that covers a rich and diverse variety of computer-based techniques, all involving some aspect of computational intelligence, but each one taking a somewhat pragmatic view. Many complex problems in the real world require the application of some form of what we loosely call “intel- gence”fortheirsolution. Fewcanbesolvedbythenaiveapplicationofasingle technique, however good it is. Authors in this collection recognize the li- tations of individual paradigms, and propose some practical and novel ways in which di?erent CI techniques can be combined with each other, or with more traditional computational techniques, to produce powerful probl- solving environments which exhibit synergy, i. e. , systems in which the whole 1 is greater than the sum of the parts . Computational intelligence is a relatively new term, and there is some d- agreement as to its precise de?nition. Some practitioners limit its scope to schemes involving evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, fuzzy logic, or hybrids of these. For others, the de?nition is a little more ?exible, and will include paradigms such as Bayesian belief networks, multi-agent systems, case-based reasoning and so on. Generally, the term has a similar meaning to the well-known phrase “Arti?cial Intelligence” (AI), although CI is p- ceived moreas a “bottom up” approachfrom which intelligent behaviour can emerge, whereasAItendstobestudiedfromthe“topdown”,andderivefrom pondering upon the “meaning of intelligence”. (These and other key issues will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 1.

Surgery Of Female Incontinence written by Stuart L. Stanton and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

In this book we have expert urologists and gynaecologists on the two sides of the Atlantic working together with a common interest, the inadequate female urethra. What makes this volume so valuable is that it is not restricted to one speciality or one cult, but bravely (and systematically) presents established principles and practice. Not only is the current knowledge of the anatomy and function of the continence mech anisms defined by experts carefully selected by the two authorities in the field, but this infor mation is directly applied to clinical problems for the reader to use in the care of patients. Because the basics are presented first, and followed by the methods of diagnosis, the sec tions describing each form of treatment, whether medical or surgical, are set on rational bases. These are not cookbook directions. This background is especially valuable because the incontinent female usually has a complicated disorder, each case being different, so that the responsible gynaecologists or urologists must apply as much understanding as technique if their efforts are to achieve dryness. The clear descriptions and illustrations in this book, then, act as guides as much as directives. This second edition builds on the success of the first. All of us trying to help these unfortu nate women will do more for them from having this new edition at hand.

Evolutionary algorithms, such as evolution strategies, genetic algorithms, or evolutionary programming, have found broad acceptance in the last ten years. In contrast to its broad propagation, theoretical analysis in this subject has not progressed as much. This monograph provides the framework and the first steps toward the theoretical analysis of Evolution Strategies (ES). The main emphasis is deriving a qualitative understanding of why and how these ES algorithms work.
