Cosa viene articolato attraverso i movimenti labiali nella Lingua dei segni italiana? Esiste un rapporto tra il segno (forma, ritmo, velocità) e la sua articolazione labiale? Quali sono le variabili extratestuali (contesto, caratteristiche dell’interlocutore, enfasi) che influiscono sull’articolazione delle componenti orali? Questo volume si propone di rispondere ad alcune di queste domande tracciando un percorso che parte dalla storia dell’educazione linguistica delle persone sorde in Italia e arriva fino all’uso della Lingua dei segni italiana oggi. Attraverso una breve descrizione della LIS, una panoramica degli studi già condotti in passato sul fenomeno, l’analisi di un corpus e una prova sperimentale, si arriva a classificare le componenti orali in due categorie e a definire l’entità, le funzioni del fenomeno e le sue implicazioni glottodidattiche. Ne emerge un quadro eterogeneo e variegato in cui le labializzazioni si configurano come una forma di gesto co-segnico, simile alla gestualità co-verbale per le lingue parlate, che, utilizzando le risorse di una lingua più standardizzata, ovvero l’Italiano, interfacciano il livello segnico e assicurano una maggiore stabilità e intelligibilità nella comunicazione tra segnanti svolgendo funzioni di natura semantica, pragmatica e metadiscorsiva.

Virginia Volterra and Carol Erting have made an important contribu tion to knowledge with this selection of studies on language acquisi tion. Collections of studies clustered more or less closely around a topic are plentiful, but this one is 1 nique. Volterra and Erting had a clear plan in mind when making their selection. Taken together, the studies make the case that language is inseparable from human inter action and communication and, especially in infancy, as much a matter of gestural as of vocal behavior. This book is about the social condition of Deaf people, told through a Deaf woman’s autobiography and a series of essays investigating how hearing societies relate to Deaf people. Michel Foucault described the powerful one as the beholder who is not seen. This is why a Deaf woman’s perspective is important: Minorities that we don’t even suspect we have power over observe us in turn. Majorities exert power over minorities by influencing the environment and institutions that simplify or hinder lives: language, mindsets, representations, norms, the use of professional power. Based on data collected by Eurostat, this volume provides the first discussion of statistics on the condition of Deaf people in a series of European countries, concerning education, labor, gender. This creates a new opportunity to discuss inequalities on the basis of data. The case studies in this volume reconstruct untold moments of great advancement in Deaf history, successful didactics supporting bilingualism, the reasons why Deaf empowerment for and by Deaf people does and does not succeed. A work of empowerment is effective if it acts on a double level: the community to be empowered and society at large, resulting in a transformation of society as a whole. This book provides instruments to work towards such a transformation.
