Un’idea, questa della Giornata di Studi e della pubblicazione degli atti relativi alla stessa, che ha preso le mosse da una riflessione condivisa riguardo alla necessità di dare alla Lingua dei Segni Italiana uno spazio ed una legittimazione in tutti quelli che sono i contesti educativi e formativi nei quali è coinvolta, oltre al bisogno di estendere i contesti nei quali poter parlare di lingua dei segni, comunicazione ed educazione. La situazione attuale della lis riflette l’estrema frammentazione lessicale e morfo-sintattica della lingua Italiana verbale, di varianti lessicali, forme geo-locali, pregiudizi e stereotipi. l’Italia è l’ultimo paese in Europa, insieme al Lussemburgo, a non avere ancora riconosciuto la Lingua dei Segni. In sostanza, quello che ci si propone è offrire, con questo volume, un punto di vista alternativo che riguarda tutti gli ambiti della comunicazione e delle applicazioni degli strumenti comunicativi, dalla sordità pura alle pluridisabilità, alle disabilità comunicative, ai non verbalismi. Ci è sembrata inoltre un’occasione per far convergere all’interno di un unico testo diverse professionalità coinvolte nell’ambito della comunicazione, là dove la tendenza a viverlo in maniera settoriale è quella prevalente. Unire l’ambito medico a quello educativo, a quello psico-pedagogico, a quello del cinema e della letteratura, a quello dell’interpretariato, è un obiettivo ambizioso, ma doveroso dal punto di vista della realizzazione di un progetto unitario.

This book is about the social condition of Deaf people, told through a Deaf woman’s autobiography and a series of essays investigating how hearing societies relate to Deaf people. Michel Foucault described the powerful one as the beholder who is not seen. This is why a Deaf woman’s perspective is important: Minorities that we don’t even suspect we have power over observe us in turn. Majorities exert power over minorities by influencing the environment and institutions that simplify or hinder lives: language, mindsets, representations, norms, the use of professional power. Based on data collected by Eurostat, this volume provides the first discussion of statistics on the condition of Deaf people in a series of European countries, concerning education, labor, gender. This creates a new opportunity to discuss inequalities on the basis of data. The case studies in this volume reconstruct untold moments of great advancement in Deaf history, successful didactics supporting bilingualism, the reasons why Deaf empowerment for and by Deaf people does and does not succeed. A work of empowerment is effective if it acts on a double level: the community to be empowered and society at large, resulting in a transformation of society as a whole. This book provides instruments to work towards such a transformation.

Alla luce delle poche ricerche condotte sul tema, ho deciso di partire dall’esperienza personale della sordità per concentrare i miei studi sulla percezione di questa disabilità invisibile da parte degli udenti. Con un approccio interdisciplinare che si avvale della letteratura sull’argomento, oltre che di quella medico/clinica e pedagogica, la ricerca indaga i contesti della socialità, a partire da quello familiare, soffermandosi poi su quello della formazione, scolastica e universitaria, come anticamera dell’inclusione sociale. Per questa ragione lo studio ha coinvolto da un lato gli Assistenti alla Comunicazione e gli studenti universitari sordi iscritti alla Sapienza, rispettivamente professionisti e utenti di un ponte formativo che ha fornito un punto di vista privilegiato sui punti di forza e criticità del sistema scolastico italiano; dall’altro, gli studenti iscritti al primo anno del Corso di Laurea in Scienze dell’Educazione e della Formazione, quali potenziali futuri educatori e professionisti della formazione. Se i primi hanno consentito di sviluppare la base di questa ricerca, è stata l’adozione di una metodologia quali-quantitativa applicata agli studenti, supportata da un percorso sperimentale di formazione/simulazione del mondo dei sordi, a dare il risultato più interessante sull’importanza della ricerca e della formazione nel cambiare la percezione e le modalità di approccio alla sordità e, più in generale, alla disabilità. In questo scenario, i risultati e i feedback positivi dello studio mi hanno consentito di delineare una serie di proposte volte a individuare azioni strategiche per il futuro, in grado di coinvolgere Istituzioni e professionisti nel contribuire in modo più efficace ai percorsi di accessibilità e in modo più incisivo alle dinamiche di inclusione sociale dei sordi.

Co-enrollment programming in deaf education refers to classrooms in which a critical mass of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students is included in a classroom containing mainly hearing students and which is taught by both a mainstream teacher and a teacher of the deaf. It thus offers full access to both DHH and hearing students in the classroom through "co-teaching" and avoids academic segregation of DHH students, as well as their integration into classes with hearing students without appropriate support services or modification of instructional methods and materials. Co-enrollment thus seeks to give DHH learners the best of both (mainstream and separate) educational worlds. Described as a "bright light on the educational horizon," co-enrollment programming provides unique educational opportunities and educational access for DHH learners comparable to that of their hearing peers. Co-enrollment programming shows great promise. However, research concerning co-enrollment programming for DHH learners is still in its infancy. This volume sheds light on this potentially groundbreaking method of education, providing descriptions of 14 co-enrollment programs from around the world, explaining their origins, functioning, and available outcomes. Set in the larger context of what we know and what we don't know about educating DHH learners, the volume offers readers a vision of a brighter future in deaf education for DHH children, their parents, and their communities.
