Gabriel Segovia hails from Laguna, Philippines. The youngest son of a wealthy family, he was raised with Christian values of daily prayers, respect, humility, and community service. Everything is going well for him in his quest for a future as a mechanical engineer until his final year of college. Broken with devastation when a freak accident takes his two childhood friends, he is left wondering what he could have done to save them. Under the provisions of the Military Bases Agreement between the United States and the Philippines, Filipino nationals are recruited to serve as stewards on US Navy ships. Most Filipinos enlist in the United States Navy for one purpose: an opportunity for a better life. But for Segovia, it is different. He feels the Navy might provide what he needs in search of a panacea for the emptiness and pain that haunt him. With his family's blessing, he enlists in the Navy. And like most minorities, he faces bigotry and abuse on board the ship. However, his commanding officer develops a certain admiration for him, even inviting Gabriel to a life-changing Thanksgiving dinner with his family. Love abounds, and as other family members grapple with their past, the adventure leads us back to the Philippine islands in search of closure and new beginnings. A deployment to the Western Pacific during the Vietnam War and a kidnapping motivated by vengeance push Gabriel to the limits of his endurance, faith, and call of duty. His unquestionable courage, his caring for the welfare of others, his unselfishness, and his devotion to God, country, and duty make him an inspiration to his family and his shipmates, touching the lives of many and leaving behind a legacy to be shared with generations to come as he finds peace within himself.

It's the 2030s in Ramsgate and four people who don't look quite human are found sitting, naked, in the early spring sunlight on the quay of the quiet south coast resort. The locals are puzzled – the newcomers are larger and heavier than they are and say they are fleeing the heat. Soon more arrive. Their tall red-haired leader, The Professor, talks to the universe. The locals talk among themselves. Red people appear everywhere, making friends, going into the caves, liked by some but accused of bringing infection by others. Two rivalrous brothers, Liam and Joe, take different sides as one joins a notorious far-right group. Their teacher Monica is the first to warn there'll be trouble. And she's right, there is; but there is also a great Midsummer Festival, laughter and love. Set in a world in crisis, this original, gripping fable about migration and global warming restores belief in the power of human kindness. 'A stylish, intriguing novel. A fable bursting with freshness and foresight, a charming, sparkling jewel of a novel to be cherished and held high as an antidote to modern day bleakness and climate despair.'-- Leila Aboulela ' The Red Children offers a warning and a vision of our past, present and future. This timely, vital and generous book is extraordinary in its courage, and hopeful and brutally honest in its clarity. An essential book for our times.'-- Salena Godden 'Superb. A mesmerising, deeply engrossing work.'-- Irenosen Okojie

A NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER THE POSTHUMOUS MASTERWORK FROM "ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST INFLUENTIAL MODERN WRITERS" (JAMES WOOD, THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW) Composed in the last years of Roberto Bolaño's life, 2666 was greeted across Europe and Latin America as his highest achievement, surpassing even his previous work in its strangeness, beauty, and scope. Its throng of unforgettable characters includes academics and convicts, an American sportswriter, an elusive German novelist, and a teenage student and her widowed, mentally unstable father. Their lives intersect in the urban sprawl of SantaTeresa—a fictional Juárez—on the U.S.-Mexico border, where hundreds of young factory workers, in the novel as in life, have disappeared.

(Amadeus). This heartbreaking tale uncovers a mystery in the life of one of the most important personalities of the twentieth century, guitarist Andres Segovia (1893-1987). He married the widowed Paquita Madriguera (1900-1965), famous child prodigy pianist and prized student of Enrique Granados, in 1935 as his international career was blossoming. They fled their native Spain under death threats when the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936 and began an odyssey that landed them in the Uruguayan capital. Segovia's support for the fascist Franco resulted in his banishment from the lucrative American concert scene, while the travel dangers of World War II further isolated him from the rest of the world. During this time, Segovia greatly enriched the guitar repertoire through numerous arrangements and collaborations with major composers via correspondence. It was also an era of happy family life with Paquita. The couple collaborated on two of the most important contemporary guitar concertos and traveled throughout Latin America to perform. Then tragedy struck as the guitarist became entangled with a beautiful Brazilian singer in an affair that ruined his marriage and brought tragic consequences to his family life. In writing his autobiography, Segovia could never face this period. With the help of tenacious research and Paquita's two surviving daughters, Alfredo Escande diligently lifts the veil of secrecy and reveals a magical age of music history framed around the couple's decade together.
