Der Begriff 'Sehnsucht' ist im Zusammenhang mit der literarischen Romantik so geläufig, daß sein produktionsästhetischer Gehalt, der den Begriff übersteigt, kaum noch hinterfragt wird. Aus dem Empfinden eines Mangels heraus entfacht, oszilliert die Sehnsucht zwischen dem ersehnten Zustand und der je und je entgegenstrebenden Realität. Als permanent Movierende läßt sie sich an Eichendorffs poetischem Werk nach Spielarten der Bewegung differenzieren, und dies in literalem wie allegorischem Sinn. Dabei erweist sich die Sehnsucht als Keimzelle einer Poetologie, wie Eichendorff sie seinen Texten selbst eingeschrieben hat. Den Zug zur Wehmut, der das Immobile zeitigt, hat der Dichter als poetische Herausforderung und Gefahr konsequent mitbedacht und nicht selten abgründig ausgelotet. Die Studie geht von immanenten Lyrikinterpretationen aus und bewegt sich nach und nach über Figurenanalysen in den jeweiligen Prosakontext hinein. So kann sie erweisen, daß Eichendorffs poetologische Reflexionen ein ganzes Konzept bilden, das aus dem Werk selbst heraus verständlich und tragfähig ist.

It's a critical cliché that Cervantes' Don Quixote is the first modern novel, but this distinction raises two fundamental questions. First, how does one define a novel? And second, what is the relationship between this genre and understandings of modernity? In Forms of Modernity, Rachel Schmidt examines how seminal theorists and philosophers have wrestled with the status of Cervantes' masterpiece as an 'exemplary novel', in turn contributing to the emergence of key concepts within genre theory. Schmidt's discussion covers the views of well-known thinkers such as Friedrich Schlegel, José Ortega y Gasset, and Mikhail Bakhtin, but also the pivotal contributions of philosophers such as Hermann Cohen and Miguel de Unamuno. These theorists' examinations of Cervantes's fictional knight errant character point to an ever-shifting boundary between the real and the virtual. This volume brings together for the first time essays on both Claire and Yvan Goll. The Golls made distinctive contributions to the literary cultures of France and Germany in the first half of the twentieth century. Their writings shed much light upon their respective positions within the exile communities created by the First and Second World Wars, and in the inter-war avant-gardes of Paris and Berlin, whose cosmopolitanism and eclecticism they came to embody. The Golls' literary output was shaped by, and in turn helped to enrich, the experimental trends that often challenged or transcended conventional notions according to which genre and choice of literary language are stable phenomena. The essays in this volume focus on texts by Yvan and Claire Goll in French and German, and in various literary forms: these are examined in relation to contem-porary literary, artistic and musical developments, and place particular emphasis on collaborative and interdisciplinary works. The analyses explore a wide range of theoretical perspectives, including inter-textuality, Trivialliteratur, psychoanalysis, feminism, cultural marginality and négritude. This volume presents for the first time a study of the interface between exile and travel within the context of exile from Nazi Germany. The nineteen essays share the overarching aim to compare the tropes of travel and exile as generators of a critical discourse and as central categories within German exile, in particular literature, music and film. The essays are guided by powerful questions: How does travel compare to exile, and how much overlap is there between these two categories? How do exiles travel, as practitioners of displacement? Or rather, to what extent does the concept of travel apply to the exilic predicament?
