Su palmarés luce cinco Tours de Francia y un hito único: fue el primer ciclista que con dos victorias en la Vuelta y otras tres en el Giro venció en más de una ocasión en las tres grandes, igualado recientemente por Contador. Su efectividad a la hora de conseguir los objetivos que se marcaba era apabullante: 12 podios en 13 participaciones en grandes vueltas. Consiguió tres victorias en tres participaciones en el Giro, por dos de dos en la Vuelta. En el Tour, consiguió cinco amarillos y dos segundos puestos, no pudiendo terminar por lesión en una ocasión. Fue además un campeón todoterreno, que dio paso a otro tipo de estrellas más especializadas en pruebas o disciplinas concretas del ciclismo. Hinault dominaba en todos los terrenos, desde la montaña a los esprints, pasando por las cronos; desde grandes vueltas a clásicas tan diferentes como la Lieja-Bastoña-Lieja o la París-Roubaix. Apodado el Tejón por su espíritu combativo, se convirtió en patrón no oficial del pelotón, tanto en las clasificaciones como a la hora de liderar protestas del colectivo ciclista o hacer frente a manifestantes obstaculizando el paso del pelotón. Sus batallas contra Laurent Fignon, primero, y Greg LeMond después son ya historia, especialmente aquel magnífico Tour de 1986 en el que lucharon hasta la extenuación a pesar de formar parte del mismo equipo La Vie Claire. Tras su retirada, siguió muchos años vinculado al Tour en su organización y veía como Francia busca desde su retirada un sucesor, un ciclista que pueda llevarse la general del Tour de Francia, algo que no ha sucedido desde su última victoria en París.
