Waves And Rays In Elastic Continua written by Michael A Slawinski and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-15 with Science categories.

The present book — which is the third, significantly revised edition of the textbook originally published by Elsevier Science — emphasizes the interdependence of mathematical formulation and physical meaning in the description of seismic phenomena. Herein, we use aspects of continuum mechanics, wave theory and ray theory to explain phenomena resulting from the propagation of seismic waves. The book is divided into three main sections: Elastic Continua, Waves and Rays and Variational Formulation of Rays. There is also a fourth part, which consists of appendices. In Elastic Continua, we use continuum mechanics to describe the material through which seismic waves propagate, and to formulate a system of equations to study the behaviour of such a material. In Waves and Rays, we use these equations to identify the types of body waves propagating in elastic continua as well as to express their velocities and displacements in terms of the properties of these continua. To solve the equations of motion in anisotropic inhomogeneous continua, we invoke the concept of a ray. In Variational Formulation of Rays, we show that, in elastic continua, a ray is tantamount to a trajectory along which a seismic signal propagates in accordance with the variational principle of stationary traveltime. Consequently, many seismic problems in elastic continua can be conveniently formulated and solved using the calculus of variations. In the Appendices, we describe two mathematical concepts that are used in the book; namely, homogeneity of a function and Legendre's transformation. This section also contains a list of symbols. Seismic Waves And Rays In Elastic Media written by M.A. Slawinski and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-08-04 with Science categories.

This book seeks to explore seismic phenomena in elastic media and emphasizes the interdependence of mathematical formulation and physical meaning. The purpose of this title - which is intended for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as scientists interested in quantitative seismology - is to use aspects of continuum mechanics, wave theory and ray theory to describe phenomena resulting from the propagation of waves. The book is divided into three parts: Elastic continua, Waves and rays, and Variational formulation of rays. In Part I, continuum mechanics are used to describe the material through which seismic waves propagate, and to formulate a system of equations to study the behaviour of such material. In Part II, these equations are used to identify the types of body waves propagating in elastic continua as well as to express their velocities and displacements in terms of the properties of these continua. To solve the equations of motion in anisotropic inhomogeneous continua, the high-frequency approximation is used and establishes the concept of a ray. In Part III, it is shown that in elastic continua a ray is tantamount to a trajectory along which a seismic signal propagates in accordance with the variational principle of stationary travel time.

Theory Of Seismic Diffractions written by Kamill Davydovich Klem-Musatov and has been published by SEG Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Diffraction categories.

Presents a complete mathematical description of diffractions caused by seismic velocity discontinuities. Diffraction theory provides important physical insights into seismology and is a necessary part of describing the nature of a seismogram. The author describes elastic wave theory and relates it to the high-frequency approximations of ray theory.

Fundamentals Of Seismic Wave Propagation written by Chris Chapman and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-07-29 with Science categories.

Fundamentals of Seismic Wave Propagation, published in 2004, presents a comprehensive introduction to the propagation of high-frequency body-waves in elastodynamics. The theory of seismic wave propagation in acoustic, elastic and anisotropic media is developed to allow seismic waves to be modelled in complex, realistic three-dimensional Earth models. This book provides a consistent and thorough development of modelling methods widely used in elastic wave propagation ranging from the whole Earth, through regional and crustal seismology, exploration seismics to borehole seismics, sonics and ultrasonics. Particular emphasis is placed on developing a consistent notation and approach throughout, which highlights similarities and allows more complicated methods and extensions to be developed without difficulty. This book is intended as a text for graduate courses in theoretical seismology, and as a reference for all academic and industrial seismologists using numerical modelling methods. Exercises and suggestions for further reading are included in each chapter.

Seismic True Amplitude Imaging written by Jörg Schleicher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Earth (Planet) categories.

'Seismic True-Amplitude Imaging' is a ray-theoretical exposition of seismic imaging processes, unapologetic in that it bristles at any suggestion that ray theory is not wave theory. This attitude is justified in part by being right - ray theory does come from an asymptotic approximation to the wave equation - and by the fact that similar asymptotic assumptions tend to sneak like viruses into so-called full-wave-theoretical processes as well. On other issues, the text is more accommodating. After noting that the original Kirchhoff diffraction integral was devised only for forward-wave propagation, the authors concede that the term Kirchhoff migration has passed into common usage, and they learn to live with it.

The special issue contains contributions presented at the international workshop Seismic waves in laterally inhomo- geneous media IV, which was held at the Castle of Trest, Czech Republic, May 22-27, 1995. The workshop, which was attended by about 100 seismologists from more than 10 countries, was devoted mainly to the current state of theoretical and computational means of study of seismic wave propagation in complex structures. The special issue can be of interest for theoretical, global and explorational seismologists. The first part contains papers dealing with the study and the use of various methods of solving forward and inverse problems in complicated structures. Among other methods, discrete-wave number method, the finite-difference method, the edge-wave supperposition method and the ray method are studied and used. Most papers contained in the second part are related to the ray method. The most important topics are two-point ray tracing, grid calculations of travel times and amplitudes and seismic wave propagation in anisotropic media.
