Kegemilangan Kesultanan Johor yang mewarisi Kesultanan Melayu Melaka seringkali dikaitkan dengan kemajuan ekonominya menerusi perdagangan antarabangsa. Kegemilangan Johor dimanifestasikan dengan penguasaan kawasan taklukan sehingga meliputi Pahang, Kepulauan Riau, Lingga sehingga ke kawasan Pantai Timur Sumatera. Hal ini disebabkan kedudukan Johor yang begitu strategik dalam kerangka laluan utama perdagangan antarabangsa. Kemajuan ekonomi dan kekukuhan sistem politik itu juga turut menyerlah Johor–Riau sebagai pusat kegiatan intelektual yang tersohor pada abad ke–17. Maka tidak hairanlah, kemajuan ekonomi Johor yang makmur dan gemilang pada masa kini adalah meneruskan kelangsungan dari masa lalu. Kehadiran tokoh–tokoh ilmuwan dengan segala kegiatan intelektual telah menerangi kehidupan masyarakat ketika itu, sekali gus telah menaikkan lagi kegemilangan Johor–Riau. Ini menunjukkan Kerajaan Johor–Riau telah mengupayakan segala kekuatan dalam masyarakat yang menyumbangkan kepada pembentukan suatu peradaban gemilang bangsa Melayu di Nusantara. Justeru, buku ini berusaha untuk menganalisis perkembangan intelektual yang berlaku dalam kerajaan Johor–Riau. Sesungguhnya, sejarah negeri Johor merakamkan pelbagai bidang yang telah menyumbang kepada pembentukan peradaban Melayu yang gemilang. Ini diperkukuhkan dengan kepimpinan dan sistem pentadbiran Kesultanan Johor yang bersifat dinamik, tetapi masih berupaya mengekalkan jati diri Johor yang tersendiri. Hakikatnya, kemajuan dan pembangunan yang telah berlangsung sejak sekian lama telah memanifestasikan pembangunan Johor yang holistik dan mempamerkan wajah negeri Johor dalam pelbagai citra.

Singapore’s Malay (Muslim) community, constituting about 15 per cent of the total population and constitutionally enshrined as the indigenous people of Singapore, have had its fair share of progress and problems in the history of this country.
