Salah satu jenis profesi yang mengalami konstruksi sosial buruk dan penuh stigma sampai dikategorisasi sebagai sampah masyarakat adalah profesi sebagai pelacur. Dibandingkan dengan jenis profesi lainnya, pelacur adalah profesi yang paling kental dan syarat dengan tekanan, dan bahkan teror kultural dan struktural. Tak heran jika seseorang yang menjadi bagian dari komunitas ini harus menyem- bunyikan diri atau bermain peran dengan perwajahan ganda, layak- nya dunia panggung teater, selalu ada yang disembunyikan dari sisi hidup yang dijalaninya. Pelacur sebagai profesi sebenarnya melambangkan perwajah- an sesungguhnya dari pergulatan kuasa politik, ekonomi, budaya, dan moral di dalam masyarakat. Pelacur adalah orang-orang yang terlempar dari pergulatan kuasa sehingga mengalami ketidak- beruntungan nasib dan kehidupan yang tersudut secara sosial, budaya, dan bahkan politik. Hampir secara keseluruhan kajian ten- tang pelacuran menunjukkan bahwa menjadi pelacur adalah pilihan terakhir yang disertai keterpaksaan dari para aktor yang men- jalaninya. Bahkan tak sedikit para aktor yang tidak sadar karena dijebak oleh jenis kekuatan tertentu dan mengalami ketidakber- dayaan untuk keluar dari lembah hitam dunia pelacuran ini.
