In the Netherlands, where teenage pregnancies are far less frequent than in the United States, parents aim above all for family cohesiveness, often permitting young couples to sleep together and providing them with contraceptives. Drawing on extensive interviews with parents and teens, Not Under My Roof offers an unprecedented, intimate account of the different ways that girls and boys in both countries negotiate love, lust, and growing up. Tracing the roots of the parents’ divergent attitudes, Amy T. Schalet reveals how they grow out of their respective conceptions of the self, relationships, gender, autonomy, and authority. She provides a probing analysis of the way family culture shapes not just sex but also alcohol consumption and parent-teen relationships. Avoiding caricatures of permissive Europeans and puritanical Americans, Schalet shows that the Dutch require self-control from teens and parents, while Americans guide their children toward autonomous adulthood at the expense of the family bond.

Over the last century and a half, manners and formalities in the West have become less status-ridden, stiff and rigid. Debates around Norbert Elias’ theory of civilising processes gave rise to questions of a change in direction of these patterns. The concept of informalisation, which describes these transformations, was first used to analyse the tumultuous changes of the 1960s and 1970s. This increasing informality, leniency and flexibility, comes hand-in-hand with a growing demand on individuals to self-regulate their emotions. Zo wilden steeds meer ouders hun kinderen leren zichzelf te sturen en daartoe vonden ze liefdevol bijsturen belangrijker dan het afdwingen van gehoorzaamheid. Het was een emancipatie van jongeren die gepaard ging met een emancipatie van hun seksualiteit en met opschuivende geilgrenzen. Hier wordt verteld hoe de seksuele ontwikkeling van jongeren de afgelopen honderddertig jaar is veranderd, en hoe dat past in de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling van seksualiteit. Gegevens over sociale klassen, over nieuwe Nederlanders en over de usa worden met elkaar vergeleken, en reeksen levendige voorbeelden geven een spannend beeld van de omgang met liefde en lust van 'de jeugd van tegenwoordig'.
