Doch um wessen Traum geht es hier eigentlich und welche Interessen verbergen sich dahinter? Und was bedeutet es für den Menschen, wenn der Selbstoptimierungs-Gedanke, nämlich dass es immer noch besser geht, es immer noch eine Steigerung geben kann und muss, das Erfolgsgefühl des Ankommens an einem Ziel, schon vom Prinzip her ausschließt? Geht es hier wirklich, um die Freiheit sich selbst zu verwirklichen oder vielmehr um den Zwang zur Anpassung an ein politisches und wirtschaftliches System, welches die Verantwortung für dessen Teilnehmer*innen auf diese abzuwälzen sucht? Ist diese Freiheit lediglich semantisches Werkzeug unseres neoliberalen Systems? Was bedeutet neoliberal überhaupt? Diese Arbeit versucht, den vorangegangenen Fragen nachzugehen, indem Michel Foucaults Überlegungen zum Neoliberalismus auf die Analyse der Gegenwart übertragen werden sollen. Der Fokus wird auf der Gouvernementalität und besonders den in die Gouvernementalität eingebetteten Selbsttechnologien liegen, zwei Begriffe, mit denen Foucault die Wirkungsweisen des Neoliberalismus beschreibt. Aus Gründen des Umfangs werden andere Überlegungen und die zahlreichen anderen Begrifflichkeiten Foucaults, welche dieser Thematik ebenso dienlich wären, hier keinerlei Beachtung finden. Selbstoptimierung und Selbstmanagement, die zwei eng verwandten Begriffe an denen in der heutigen neoliberalen Gesellschaft wohl niemand mehr vorbeikommt. Sie stehen für große Versprechen: Das Versprechen des größtmöglichen beruflichen Erfolgs, das Versprechen der größtmöglichen Anerkennung durch die Mitmenschen, das Versprechen der größtmöglichen körperlichen Attraktivität und Fitness und das Versprechen des befriedigenden und Glück verheißenden Gefühls, sich selbst und sein Leben unter Kontrolle zu haben. Ein*e jede*r scheint frei, diese Versprechen einzulösen und diesen Traum des persönlichen Superlativs der Selbstverwirklichung für sich wahrzumachen.
