El español, el idioma hoy más hablado y estudiado en los EE.UU después del inglés, ha despertado vivo interés en ese país desde su época más temprana como estado intdependiente, por tratarse de una de las dos granfes lenguas habladas en el hemisferio occidental. Estamos ante una documentada investigación sobre el origen y el despegue del español y de las otras lenguas modernas en los planes de estudios de los centros de enseñanza superior estadounidenses durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX, etapa hasta el momento muy poco conocida. El origen del castellano en Norteamérica se conecta estrechamente al proceso de modernización de los curricula en los respectivos centros, y se cifra en la grdual sustitución de las lenguas clásicas y orientales por las modernas: inglés, francés, alemán y español fundamentalmente. Uno tras otro son examinados los diferentes colleges y universidades en su organización, sucesivos curricula, materiales dicácticos, docentes, alumnado, etc. Desde los pioneros de esas innovaciones (Filadelfia, Virginia y Harvard) a los abanderados del curriculum clásico o tradicional como Yale. Pasando por otros no tan relevantes pero también influyentes. A saber: los del norte de la Unión, los del alto medio Oeste o los del Sur, tanto en la costa atlántica como en el interior o bajo medio Oeste. A su vez, este libro profundiza en la investigación del creciente interés norteamericano por lo hispánico durante la etapa de referencia. Esto queda reflejado, por un lado, en la existencia de importantes focos culturales hispanistas en ciudades como Boston, Nueva York o Filadelfia y por otro, en la consolidación de una inmigración española e iberoamericana que propició la aparición de los primeros centros editoriales y de la primera prensa en lengua castellan de los EEUU.
