This book is an autobiographical interview with Chinese Academician Yuan Wang on his experience in mathematical research. The book looks back on Wang's collaboration with his teacher Hua Loo-Keng and younger scholars, offering insights into fruitful cooperation in mathematical research. In this book, Yuan Wang’s path of studying Goldbach conjecture is revealed in detail from motivation to method. Then his work on algebraic number theory is traced back in a separate chapter. The book ends with two chapters which introduce Wang’s interest in history of mathematics and his hobbies outside of mathematical research. Why is it that a text, particularly a canonical text, is often said to contain a meaning different from what it literally says? How did allegorical readings arise and develop? By looking at such examples as Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Song of Songs and traditional Chinese commentaries on the Confucian classic Book of Poetry, Zhang Longxi discusses allegorical readings from a broad perspective that bridges the usual East/West cultural divide and examines their social and political implications. His approach is wide-ranging, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary, exploring allegoresis with regard to religion, philosophy, and literature. In his inquiry into allegory and allegorical interpretation, Zhang examines the idea of a self-explanatory text of the Bible as conceived by Augustine, Aquinas, and Luther; discusses the importance of the literal basis of textual interpretation; and takes up the question of moral responsibility and political allegiance. Zhang, who regards utopia as an allegory of social and political ideas, explores how utopian visions vary in their Chinese and Western expressions, in the process commenting on contemporary literary theory and political readings of literature past and present.

This book deals with boundary value problems for analytic functions with applications to singular integral equations. New and simpler proofs of certain classical results such as the Plemelj formula, the Privalov theorem and the Poincaré-Bertrand formula are given. Nearly one third of this book contains the author's original works, most of which have not been published in English before and, hence, were previously unknown to most readers in the world.It consists of 7 chapters together with an appendix: Chapter I describes the basic knowledge on Cauchy-type integrals and Cauchy principal value integrals; Chapters II and III study, respectively, fundamental boundary value problems and their applications to singular integral equations for closed contours; Chapters IV and V discuss the same problems for curves with nodes (including open arcs); Chaper VI deals with similar problems for systems of functions; Chapter VII is concerned with some miscellaneous problems and the Appendix contains some basic results on Fredholm integral equations. In most sections, there are carefully selected sets of exercises, some of which supplement the text of the sections; answers/hints are also given for some of these exercises.For graduate students or seniors, all the 7 chapters can be used for a full year course, while the first 3 chapters may be used for a one-semester course.
