Born in Bucharest of peasant stock, Tudor Arghezi (1880-1967) was awarded Romania's National Poetry Prize in 1946 and the State Prize for Poetry in 1956. The translators of this volume have endeavored not only to convey the spirit of the original Romanian, but to find an English equivalent for its sound. The English verse, printed facing the Romanian, conveys the distilled, metaphorical nature of a poetry that expresses a strong sense of ancestral continuity and apocalyptic visions of the world. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The first major poet of the Hebrew literary renaissance of Moslem Spain, Shmuel Ben Yosef Ha-Levi HaNagid (993-1056 c.e.) was also the Prime Minister of the Muslim state of Granada, battlefield commander of the non-Jewish Granadan army, and one of the leading religious figures in a medieval Jewish world that stretched from Andalusia to Baghdad. Peter Cole's groundbreaking versions of HaNagid's poems capture the poet's combination of secular and religious passion, as well as his inspired linking of Hebrew and Arabic poetic practice. This annotated Selected Poems is the most comprehensive collection of HaNagid's work published to date in English. "The Multiple Troubles of Man" The multiple troubles of man, my brother, like slander and pain, amaze you? Consider the heart which holds them all in strangeness, and doesn't break. "I'd Suck Bitter Poison from the Viper's Mouth" I'd suck bitter poison from the viper's mouth and live by the basilisk's hole forever, rather than suffer through evenings with boors, fighting for crumbs from their table.

In Hora Mortis Under The Iron Of The Moon written by Thomas Bernhard and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-05-14 with Poetry categories.

Haunting and darkly humorous poems by the internationally acclaimed Austrian novelist, playwright, and memoirist Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) has been compared to Kafka and Beckett, and critics have ranked his novels among the masterpieces of the twentieth century. But in fact he began his career in the 1950s as a poet, publishing three books of well-received verse before turning to fiction. In Hora Mortis / Under the Iron of the Moon is the first book of his expressionist-like poetry to be published in English. Bringing together Bernhard's second and third books of poetry, the collection's short, untitled lyrics reveal his early explorations of themes that would continue to preoccupy him in his novels, plays, and other writings—especially his intense ambivalence toward the land and people of Austria and their then-recent Nazi past. As the translator James Reidel writes in his preface, "Bernhard found Austrian soil . . . to be like a hair shirt and a blanket. It is a killing ground but with a postcard setting." In poems that both subvert and pay homage to such influences as Georg Trakl, Bernhard begins to develop his characteristic dark humor while exploring themes of nature, death, meaninglessness, and faith.

Hymns And Fragments written by Friedrich Hölderlin and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-10 with Poetry categories.

An annotated bilingual edition of Hölderlin’s radical and influential late poetry Despite his influence on such figures as Nietzsche, Rilke, Heidegger, and Celan, Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) is only now being fully appreciated as perhaps the first great modern of European poetry. Drawing on the most recent scholarship, this annotated translation conveys the radical idiom and vision that continue to make him a contemporary. Richard Sieburth includes almost all Hölderlin’s late poems in free rhythms from the years between 1801 and 1806, the period just prior to his hospitalization for insanity. Sieburth’s critical introduction discusses the poet’s career, assesses his role as the link between classicism and romanticism, and explores Hölderlin’s ongoing importance to modern poetics and philosophy. Annotations explicate the individual poems, a number of which are translated into English for the first time.
