Simultaneous Statistical Inference, which was published originally in 1966 by McGraw-Hill Book Company, went out of print in 1973. Since then, it has been available from University Microfilms International in xerox form. With this new edition Springer-Verlag has republished the original edition along with my review article on multiple comparisons from the December 1977 issue of the Journal of the American Statistical Association. This review article covered developments in the field from 1966 through 1976. A few minor typographical errors in the original edition have been corrected in this new edition. A new table of critical points for the studentized maximum modulus is included in this second edition as an addendum. The original edition included the table by K. C. S. Pillai and K. V. Ramachandran, which was meager but the best available at the time. This edition contains the table published in Biometrika in 1971 by G. 1. Hahn and R. W. Hendrickson, which is far more comprehensive and therefore more useful. The typing was ably handled by Wanda Edminster for the review article and Karola Decleve for the changes for the second edition. My wife, Barbara, again cheerfully assisted in the proofreading. Fred Leone kindly granted permission from the American Statistical Association to reproduce my review article. Also, Gerald Hahn, Richard Hendrickson, and, for Biometrika, David Cox graciously granted permission to reproduce the new table of the studentized maximum modulus. The work in preparing the review article was partially supported by NIH Grant ROI GM21215.

The theory and practice of decision making involves infinite or finite number of actions. The decision rules with a finite number of elements in the action space are the so-called multiple decision procedures. Several approaches to problems of multi ple decisions have been developed; in particular, the last decade has witnessed a phenomenal growth of this field. An important aspect of the recent contributions is the attempt by several authors to formalize these problems more in the framework of general decision theory. In this work, we have applied general decision theory to develop some modified principles which are reasonable for problems in this field. Our comments and contributions have been written in a positive spirt and, hopefully, these will an impact on the future direction of research in this field. Using the various viewpoints and frameworks, we have emphasized recent developments in the theory of selection and ranking ~Ihich, in our opinion, provides one of the main tools in this field. The growth of the theory of selection and ranking has kept apace with great vigor as is evidenced by the publication of two recent books, one by Gibbons, Olkin and Sobel (1977), and the other by Gupta and Panchapakesan (1979). An earlier monograph by Bechhofer, Kiefer and Sobel (1968) had also provided some very interest ing work in this field.

The research university is one of the most characteristic and important institutions of our time. It is an extremely complex entity, seeking to achieve a variety of aims and responding to a multiplicity of pressures. Its principal obligation is to educate students and to prepare them to live in and contribute to society. To serve this function, knowledge must be collected, organized, and disseminated, but perhaps even more important, new knowledge must be created. The knowledge so developed and imparted must ultimately be carried out into society, largely through former students but also by other means. The present volume is a collection of 30 essays on the character, administration, and management of research universities, with special emphasis on the perspective of statistics and operations research. It thus concentrates on issues of systematic planning, planning models, teaching approaches, and management associated with the aims and methods of operations research, although it also deals with more general concerns about the management of universities and university resources, and with some of the applications of operations-research and statistical tools that have moved outside university settings.
