A Handbook Of Oral Reading Classic Reprint written by Lee Emerson Bassett and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-17 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Excerpt from A Handbook of Oral Reading The greater part of the literature read in schools belongs to that class of writing which De Quincey calls the litera ture of power, as distinguished from the literature of mere knowledge. The literature of knowledge treats of facts as such; the literature of power holds and moves and inspires men by virtue of its truth, its beauty, its imagination, and its feeling. It tells us how men think and feel and how they relate themselves to other men and to the world in which they live. Obviously one who reads with full understanding must exercise the imagination and the sympathies, and must hold them subject to the influence of what he reads. New experiences are thus made his through contact with the thought and experience of the author and, as when Keats heard Chapman speak out loud and bold, a larger world extending beyond the little circle of his everyday life, it opened to him. But the range and power of such literature are seldom realized by the student until he hears it read aloud, or he himself attempts to express its thought and Spirit. The printed word is given reality and life when it is uttered by the living voice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The American Common-School Reader and Speaker: Being a Selection of Pieces in Prose and Verse, With Rules for Reading and Speaking The preparation of the pieces for the purpose of applying the rules of elocution, has been regulated by a regard to the importance of placing before the reader, but one principle or rule at a time, of presenting it clearly, and of repeating it with sufficient frequency to fix it firmly on the mind. The marking by which the modifications of the Voice are indicated is accordingly, restricted, principally, to one subject in each; so as to avoid confusion, and to secure a full and lasting impression of each rule or principle. In modulation and expression, however, where there exists a natural complexity In the subject itself, the marking 13, of course. More intricate. Still, it will be found, we trust, clear and deft. Excerpt from The Step-Ladder: A Collection of Prose and Poetry Designed for Use in Children's Classes in Elocution, and for Supplementary Reading in Public and Private Schools TO those who are already acquainted with the Emerson system Of teaching reading, the plan of this volume will seem natural and familiar; but the greater number of teachers likely to use the book have probably not studied any particular way Of teaching the subject above the primary grades, and to them is due some explanation of the method to be followed in using the book. Though the teaching Of primary reading has improved in recent years, in the more advanced grades there seems to be very little improvement in the reading itself so far as expression is con cerned. Some of the trouble arises from a mis taken notion concerning the Object Of teaching oral reading. While, of course, one end of learn ing to read is the acquirement of knowledge through the printed page, the reading-book should not be the medium for teaching mere facts about zoology, botany, or history, or anything else. TO read aloud well the mind must be full of the sub jcet, and roused by its vital interest. Only a few philosophers are quickened by the rattle Of the dry bones of facts. The reading-book should directly or indirectly give the learner power to grasp and use words, the ability to reproduce fine thoughts through the voice, and to bring the pupil so in touch with great literary minds that their thoughts become his and are reproduced to a third person or a thousand other persons, so that all who hear are made to feel the truths presented. The object of the present volume is to put in necessary order a collection Of selections which will develop the child's expressive power in natu ral lines, and lead him up to the point where he may use with advantage the Evolution of Expres sion prepared by Dr. Emerson, which this volume is intended to precede, although it may be used independently or in connection with any preferred series of reading-books. But the selections in this book are arranged to follow the general plan of those volumes, they being based on the exact laws of mental development, which must necessarily be If the teacher would quicken the pupil's mind so that it acts freely in any particular line, he must not only know those laws, but their special appli cation to the subject under consideration.
