Excerpt from Selections From Carlyle The present volume, it is believed, includes within its narrow limits material adequate for the elementary study of Carlyle in his earliest and most fruitful period. The notes are planned in the main to give aid rather than information or Opinion. By the frequent quotation of supplementary or illustrative passages wherever it was practicable, the plan has been to let the author annotate himself. Occasionally it has seemed natural to call atten tion to some characteristic mode of thought or of expres sion, but in neither case has a set analysis been attempted. The editor's suggestions to the teacher who may use this book are three: First, that some sort of insight into the character of the man Carlyle is essential, not only as a commentary upon, but as an introduction to, the study of his work. Second, that a good deal of additional matter should be read aloud to the class, with a view to familiarizing them with peculiarities of manner which are obstacles only to the unaccustomed ear. And third, that all systematic discussion of style be reserved until the student has had a chance to form an Opinion of his own, and is ready to take a part in the discussion. Excerpt from Masters of Literature, Carlyle For more than twenty-five years of his lifetime Carlyle occupied a place among his contemporaries which is very nearly unique in the history of English men of letters. Men of all schools and of all parties listened for the oracles delivered at Chelsea with veneration, enthusiasm, doubt, dissent, or amusement, but always with close attention. His denunciations of what displeased him in life or in letters were passed about from mouth to mouth and laughed at or applauded, while his approval of a scheme or of a movement was looked upon by those (and they were not many) who received it as a testimonial of the highest worth. He was, in short, almost an English institution. And this ascendancy was quite as much a tribute to his character as an acknowledgment of his genius. Men felt that he had reached his convictions by the road of personal experience as well as of ardent intellectual toil, that he had taught himself before he took it upon himself to teach others, and that whatever value might be attributed to the message he delivered, there could be no shadow of doubt regarding its sincerity. Like Dr. Johnson, with whom, in spite of many points of dissimilarity, Carlyle had a great deal in common, his position was due to what he was as much as to what he had written. Johnson, an Englishman of Englishmen, a Tory and a Royalist, content to accept the teaching of the Church of England with scarcely a movement of doubt, was, as Carlyle himself discerned, gifted by nature for "the noblest of earthly tasks, that of Priesthood and guidance of mankind." Excerpt from Seances With Carlyle I was awakened about three in the morning by the Sound Of a gentle rain on the roof. The musical patter, patter came with an insistence that drove Sleep away, and every now and again a larger drop fell with an impatient tap. By degrees I realized that a voice was trying to make itself heard through the rhythm Of the Shower, and straining my ears I caught a petulant, Well? Coincident with the splash of an uncommonly large drop. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Conversations With Carlyle Critics of these papers have recognised that Carlyle is made to use the exact phraseology he Was accustomed to employ. The conversations were, in fact, written down immediately after they took place, When his emphatic and significant language was still fresh in my memory. Readers Who knew Carlyle Will, I think, recognise the familiar cadence, and those Who did not know him Will have the means of realising his ordinary speech and method for themselves. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Carlyle Boswellism has its place in the case of a man like Carlyle properly a very great place. So far as the flood of personalities and trivialities in his case has been excessive, he provoked it himself, it will be said, by Remim'seenees. What is to be said of these Reminiscence: First, that they' are no true revelation of Carlyle at all to him who does not al ready know Carlyle and know where to place them. We do not, as has been said, reveal a man when we give to the public what his deliberate judgment would have withheld. To print, as the poor fee ble hand left them on the very morrow of the shock which appears for the time to have enfeebled his mind, those incoherent jottings, with their tangled parentheses and their incessant repetitions, seems to us the same kind of mistake as to exhibit some sketch by a great master, almost blotted out by his tears. Hid in its portfolio, the sketch was some thing sacred we can imagine those who had a right to gaze on it drawing it forth reverently, and feeling their own eyes moisten at the sight. But hung on the Academy walls, the effect is far otherwise. We, who find it there, can only pass it in mournful si lence, in painful consciousness that it cannot be in terpreted to the casual looker-ou. That these Rem iniscence: were written in the most inconsiderate manner, in a day of grief, when the mind was sick. Excerpt from Selections From Carlyle: Sartor Resartus; The French Revolution; Past and Present From the first, Carlyle had a sure faith in the greatness of his Book, although he realized also that fools would not receive it gladly. I have a Book in me that will cause ears to tingle, he writes in December, I830; and in July, I831: I think that the world will in no wise be enraptured.
