The first collection of food writing by Britain's funniest and most feared critic A.A. Gill knows food, and loves food. A meal is never just a meal. It has a past, a history, connotations. It is a metaphor for life. A.A. Gill delights in decoding what lies behind the food on our plates: famously, his reviews are as much ruminations on society at large as they are about the restaurants themselves. So alongside the concepts, customers and cuisines, ten years of writing about restaurants has yielded insights on everything from yaks to cowboys, picnics to politics. TABLE TALK is an idiosyncratic selection of A.A. Gill's writing about food, taken from his Sunday Times and Tatler columns. Sometimes inspired by the traditions of a whole country, sometimes by a single ingredient, it is a celebration of what great eating can be, an excoriation of those who get it wrong, and an education about our own appetites. Because it spans a decade, the book focuses on A.A. Gill's general dining experiences rather than individual restaurants - food fads, tipping, chefs, ingredients, eating in town and country and abroad, and the best and worst dining experiences. Fizzing with wit, it is a treat for gourmands, gourmets and anyone who relishes good writing.

Excerpt from Selections From Table Talk Even the folio of Captain Bell's translation, from which these Selections have been printed, has been prepared for reprint by some preceding editor, whose pen has been busy in revision of the passages he did mean to reprint. In these Selections every paragraph stands unabridged, exactly as it was translated by Captain Bell; and there has been no other purpose governing the choice of matter than a resolve to make it as true a presentment as possible of Luther's mind and character. At least one other volume of Selections from the Table-Talk of Martin Luther will be given in this Library. Johann Goldschmid, the Aurifaber, and thereby true worker in gold, who first gave Luther's TableTalk to the world, was born in 1519. He was a disciple of Luther, thirty-six years younger than his master. Luther was born at Eisleben in 1483, and his father, a poor miner, presently settled at Mansfeld, the town in which Goldschmid afterwards was born. A poet and banker who knew everybody, Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) was a brilliant recorder of things said by his famous and powerful contemporaries, from Edmund Burke to Talleyrand, from Charles James Fox to the Duke of Wellington. He was all ears, very good at hearing what was said, and assiduous about recording it in a kind of laconic shorthand. Originally published in the 1830s, but not edited since then, his energetic, entertaining, and occasionally eye-popping table-talk gives phenomenal texture to our understanding of Regency high life. Reading it is like eavesdropping on the past. Introduced by the distinguished literary critic Professor Christopher Ricks.

" “I, CAPTAIN HENRY BELL, do hereby declare, both to the present age, and also to posterity, that being employed beyond the seas in state affairs divers years together, both by King James, and also by the late King Charles, in Germany, I did hear and understand, in all places, great bewailing and lamentation made, by reason of the destroying and burning of above fourscore thousand of Martin Luther’s books, entitled His Last Divine Discourses.“For after such time as God stirred up the spirit of Martin Luther to detect the corruptions and abuses of Popery, and to preach Christ, and clearly to set forth the simplicity of the Gospel, many Kings, Princes, and States, Imperial Cities, and Hans-Towns fell from the Popish Religion, and became Protestants, as their posterities still are, and remain to this very day."

The Collected Works of Martin Luther presents a comprehensive compilation of the seminal writings that catalyzed the Reformation and marked a pivotal shift in Christian thought. This anthology encompasses Luther's theological treatises, sermons, and hymns, reflecting his profound engagement with scriptural texts and emphasis on personal faith. Characterized by his direct, unembellished prose, the works are steeped in the socio-political context of 16th-century Europe, revealing a fervent challenge to ecclesiastical authority and an earnest plea for the accessibility of scripture to all believers. Martin Luther (1483-1546) was not only a renowned theologian but also a passionate reformer whose life experiences deeply influenced his writings. Raised in an environment laden with spiritual and ethical dilemmas, he grappled with the church's practices, particularly the sale of indulgences. The pivotal moment of his 'Ninety-Five Theses' launched a movement towards religious reform, rooted in his beliefs in justification by faith and the priesthood of all believers, which resonate throughout his collected works. This collection is essential for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of modern Protestantism and the transformative theological ideas that emerged from Luther's pen. Scholars, theologians, and interested lay readers alike will find in this compilation not only the historical significance but also the spiritual depth that continues to inspire generations.
