"Philippians is a letter full of good examples. Paul, Epaphroditus, and Timothy are all portrayed as exemplars. But none is more important than Jesus himself. In Self-Giving Love, Dean Flemming shows how Jesus and the story of his self-emptying love are the very heart of Philippians. This ultimate example provides a lens for clearly seeing the rest of the letter. By emulating Jesus' radical love, we will become mature, foster unity, and find joy"--

Most Bible readers know “God is love” (1 John 4:8,16). And most have heard the words of John 3:16 (“God so loved the world”), perhaps the best-known verse in the entire Bible. But few readers realize that these are perhaps the most daring verses in all the Scripture. Why? They tell us who God is and why we can trust him. Yet very few Christians realize how much of what they believe about the nature of God is rooted in ideas foreign to divine love. How did this happen? What can be done to change how we can relate to the God who is perfect and inexhaustible love? John Armstrong shares a deeply personal story of his long, slow journey to know and experience God as a compassionate and loving Father. As a pastor trained in evangelical theology he came to know and experience the teaching of the whole church about God, thus the story he tells will inform how you can know the God who is amazing love. This readable primer will help you develop a doctrine that can free you from guilt, fear, and many misconceptions we have about God. You will see that what you believe about God will truly affect everything else you believe.

The gospel is often presented as little more than a "get out of hell free" pass. But is that all there is to it? What made it so compelling that the Apostle Paul would give up everything, enduring hardships and deprivation to preach good news? David deSilva argues that some Christians have unintentionally reduced the gospel to a message Paul would hardly recognize. The "gift of righteousness" is far richer than many of us have dared to imagine! In Transformation: The Heart of Paul's Gospel, deSilva examines the gospel message as presented in Paul's letters. He demonstrates that Paul had nothing less than in mind than the means to transform and renew all of creation--including ourselves. Prepare to let Paul's message of change and renewal transform your own thinking.

This book offers a cross-cultural and inter-religious understanding of the ways social transformation in Asia is related to Asian spiritualities. Bringing together scholars and practitioners from different cultures and fields of study, it collates cutting-edge research and applies it to the role of Asian spiritualities in social transformation. Spirituality has garnered increasing attention in recent years across diverse fields of research and practice, from psychology and healthcare, to anthropology, education, sociology, political sciences, social work, feminist studies, cultural studies, religious studies, theology, philosophy, and so on. However, the term means different things within these different disciplines. Spirituality can be understood to be private and personal, but also public and societal, not only as a force that brings about change but also one that helps maintain the status quo – not only as a core element in religion but also as something disconnected from it. This book poses that to gain a firm grasp of spirituality, one needs to traverse these different terrains. Disbarring the orientalist understanding of spirituality that is often found embedded in stereotypes of the East as mystical, esoteric, and spiritual, in contrast to the West as scientific and rational, this book deconstructs this binarism to enable a sophisticated understanding of the diversity within Eastern and Western spiritualities. It presents “Asian spirituality” as a misnomer, focusing on the plurality of spiritualties and the region’s multifaceted religiosity, and it also excavates interfaith terrains. It is of interest to social scientists, theologians and religious scholars, and students and researchers interested in Asian spiritualties and social movements

Most ideas of sacrifice, even specifically Christian ideas, as we saw in the Reformation controversies, have something to do with deprivation or destruction. But this is not authentic Christian sacrifice. Authentic Christian sacrifice, and ultimately all true sacrifice (whether one is conscious of it or not) begins with the self-offering of the Father in the gift-sending of the Son, continues with the loving "response" of the Son, in his humanity, and in the Spirit, to the Father and for us, and finally, begins to become real in our world when human beings, in the power of the same Spirit that was in Jesus, respond to love with love, and thus begin to enter into that perfectly loving, totally self-giving relationship that is the life of the triune God. The origins of this are in the Hebrew Bible, its revelatory high-points in Jesus and Paul, and its working out in the life of the Church, especially its Eucharistic Prayers. Special attention will be paid to the atonement, not just because atonement and sacrifice are often synonymous, but also because traditional atonement theology is the source of distortions that continue to plague Christian thinking about sacrifice. After exploring the possibility of finding a phenomenology of sacrificial atonement in Girardian mimetic theory, the book will end with some suggestions on how to communicate its findings to people likely to be put off from the outset by the negative connotations associated with "sacrifice."

In our time the cross is often more a source of controversy than a sign of peace. While aware of differing points of view, Alexandra Brown shows that Paul's proclamation of the cross was an inclusive and empowering word of liberation, peace, and reconciliation. In 1 Corinthians Paul strikes at the heart of schism in the church. Against the barriers of ego and ideology that divided believers in Corinth, he proclaims a liberating message. This book explores the way the word of the cross in 1 Corinthians invades the perception of its hearers, liberating them from the old world with its enslaving system of convictions and ushering them into the new creation revealed by the cross.

Can the real Paul the apostle live again in a postmodern, technological age? Paul’s ministry stood at the very headwaters of the Christian gospel surrounding Jesus of Nazareth. His letters are the earliest documents contained in the New Testament. The current work calls upon the reader to actively engage Paul in his context, rather than to affirm the assumed theological Paul of later Christian orthodoxy. The reader is thus invited to walk with a more real Paul as he may be imagined from the sources we have, to think Paul’s thoughts with him through his letters, and to more fully experience the gospel of God that Paul knew and proclaimed. Paul was a “man in Christ” directly called by God to announce the gospel of God to both Jew and gentile in the midst of a world ruled by Rome. He did so through two major campaigns, rather than “three missionary journeys.” He wrote pastoral letters to real first-century churches. The real Paul did not write theology, but he rather proclaimed a gospel to a world in search of a soul.
