Anil Sharma in his book The Practice of Self Enquiry has come out with a detailed exposition on the teachings of his guru Sage Sri Ramana In December 1993 the author of this book Sri Anil Sharma experienced the rising of cosmic currents in his body- a result of which for the next seven years he experienced the various states of higher consciousness. This book is a dedication to his satguru Sri Ramana Maharshi.Maharshi especially for people who are seeking enlightenment and making an effort to know the various concepts pertaining to birth-death-rebirth and realizing : Who am I? In easy and understandable terms, Anil Sharma has flawlessly described to aspirants who are in search of meaning of life and its earthly existence. The author explains, "Our consciousness of our own being, that is 'I am', alone can be our real self. The non-dual and indivisible consciousness of our own being is our true consciousness, indeed it is our true self, our essential being, of what we really are. This is always present in all our three states : waking, dream and sleep, and in all the three divisions of time: past, present and future. This is what the Sage taught one and all, the simple practice of self-attentiveness which is the path of atma-vichara, 'self-inquiry' or self-investigation. And, whatever Sage Ramana said through his teachings, that is the only way by which we can experience perfect peace and bliss that is our own true nature, our own real being.

This book deals both with the need for self-inquiry in daily life. Everybody needs sleep for his survival. If a man does not have sleep adequately he will go insane and his life will be in disorder. Similarly everybody needs meditation in the waking state, otherwise his mind and life will be in disorder. This disorder is quite obvious both inside the mind and so outside in the present world where the majority of humanity has no understanding or time to do meditation. Meditation is to go beyond thought and establish ourselves in being. But we cannot go beyond thought with the mechanics of the workings of the "me" which is an isolating and destructive factor. At present thought is dominating and directing our way of life. Thought is a reaction of past memories and experiences and with these it faces the challenge in the present which is always new, it encounters it partially which results in conflict. So thought as our master of life brings disaster and ego is nothing but thought.Thought subsides when the activity of the "me" subsides which is the result of the understanding born out of awareness, watchfulness in a state of observation in which there is not a trace of condemnation or justification of what is being observed. In that passive alertness we listen to the noise of the "me" with relaxed attention beyond the noise of words without intervening with the screen of thoughts, conclusions and prejudices. The search for truth is individual and is not possible in religious congregations. It is possible in self-inquiry where we go beyond thought and establish in being. In that way, we respond to the challenge of the present in a holistic way instead of getting lost in imagination, day dreaming and we relax totally in being with full awareness. What is it that is to be investigated in self-Inquiry? We have to investigate whether there is such an entity as the “thinker”, the “me” as noun apart from thought. If we remove all thoughts from the thinker does an entity, as “thinker” remain? So thought is the thinker. One part of the mind assumes the role of thinker and it feels it is separate from other thoughts. Is the thinker separate from thought? We have to investigate. As the “I-am-the-body” idea is the root of all thoughts we have to investigate whether identity with the body through “I-am-the-body” idea is existential or not. This is an important investigation. Once we start investigating we bring awareness into the investigation and in the presence of awareness thought flow is reduced and finally comes to a standstill. Then we develop the capacity to hold on to “I-am-the-body” idea. Pure “I-am-the-body” idea is filled with pure awareness. It is not an obstruction to the revelation of self-knowledge. We can hold on to pure “I-am-the-body” idea in the interval between the transition of mind from one mode to another or in the interval between two thoughts. Then investigation becomes a piece of cake because there is no clouding of consciousness by thoughts in that interval. Till then we fall back into unawareness due to strong mental habits which are called tendencies even while doing self-inquiry. So uninterrupted Self-awareness (sada apramada) is needed for self inquiry. The practice of Self-Enquiry. The reason why the scriptures begin by teaching that the five sheaths are not "I”, is that in order to practice Self-Enquiry, it is useful for an aspirant to understand intellectually that the "I" which is to be attended to is not the body or any other adjuncts which are now felt by him to be mixed with the feeling of "I”. But since Bhagawan does not want us to fall a prey to the misunderstanding that pondering intellectually over the truth that five sheaths are not” I", is itself the method of negating the five sheaths. He has carefully taught us the method of practicing Self-Enquiry before revealing tous the revelation that the five sheaths are not "I".

Everybody is aware, all seven billion of us. We are aware of thoughts, feelings, sensations, and perceptions. All people share the experience of being aware, but relatively few people are aware that they are aware. Most people’s lives consist of a flow of thoughts, images, ideas, feelings, sensations, sights, sounds, and so on. Very few people ask, 'What is it that knows this flow of thoughts, feelings, and perceptions? With what am I aware of my experience?' The knowing of our being—or rather, awareness’s knowing of its own being in us—is our primary, fundamental and most intimate experience. It is in this experience that the peace, happiness and love for which all people long reside. The happiness we have sought so long outside of ourselves, in situations, objects and relationships, turns out to be always present and available in the simple knowing of our own being as it truly is. The knowing of our own being shines in each of us as the experience ‘I am’ or ‘I am aware’, or simply the knowledge ‘I’. This obvious, familiar and intimate experience has no objective qualities and is, therefore, overlooked or ignored by the majority of people. This overlooking of our own being is the ultimate cause of unhappiness. What is the nature of the experience of being aware or awareness itself? The exploration of this question is the subject matter of this book and the essence of the Direct Path to peace and happiness. * * * The Essence of Meditation Series presents meditations on the essential, non-dual understanding that lies at the heart of all the great religious and spiritual traditions, compiled from contemplations led by Rupert Spira at his meetings and retreats. This simple, contemplative approach, which encourages a clear seeing of one’s experience rather than any kind of effort or discipline, leads the reader to an experiential understanding of their own essential being and the peace and fulfillment that are inherent within it. Being Aware of Being Aware is the first and introductory volume in The Essence of Meditation Series.

Authors Note.In the last century a significant event has taken place in the spiritual history of man on the form of Self realization of Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharshi. Many saints got Self realized but Bhagawan's appears to be unique. When Bhagawan got Self realized he is only 16 years of age,not yet under any established spiritual discipline. He never heard the word Brahman but he became Brahman. His death experience is unique in the spiritual history.Actually he underwent physical death at the time of Self realization.During that period the conscious aspect of his mind inquired into what is death. He inquired into it with watchfulness, witnessing, without any interference of thought in the form of preconceived ideas, beliefs, dogmas, ideas of reincarnation etc about the death,so he is in direct contact with the “fact of death”.After inquiring into death,he has gone beyond death, mrutyunjaya. But luckily for all of us the life forc has entered again into his body and he started moving. All this happened in just 20 minutes which never happened so easily in any other saints history.Similar death experiences happened two more times and Bhagawan existentially came to know that his essential nature is Pure conscious being but not body-mind complex as he previously thought to be.Since then he established as Brahman and lived life accordingly. He diagnosed the root cause of suffering is body identity through “I-am-the-body-idea”.He found self-inquiry is the best and direct method to root out that identity with the body. All spiritual disciplines keep the “me” which is the source of misery and they go on “doing” something to attain the Self.In self-inquiry the very existence of me is questioned and scrutinized. So “me” is not used to do self-inquiry.In Upadesa saram in 17th sutra Bhagawan said when we set out find where is the “me”,it will be found non-existent.(Naiva Manasam). So self-inquiry is a scientific method done with awareness about nature, structure, style of functioning of the “me”.So self-inquiry does not belong to any religion and can be done by any sincre truth seeker irrespective of his background of what religion, belief, dogma he belongs to.So self-inquiry is an inquiry into the nature of impediments which are obstructing the discovery of inner Self, the immeasurable, that which is timeless and so eternal. In this book the author gives a brief biography of Bhagawan, his death experience in his own words, his original “Who-am-I” text, and the observations of the author on self-inquiry which may be useful for those who are doing self-inquiry in the light of Bhagawan.Bhagawan is such a great saint he conferred Self knowledge to a cow which we usually hear in ancient Puranas. His equanimity towards all beings is quite significant. The way he died is also unique. After his leaving the body,a blue light arose from his body, went high up in the sky like a meteor and finally merged in the holy mountain of Arunachala. Such event happened only in the case of Lord Krishna and Manikya Vachakar. For the author he is a living guru for him because “presence” of Bhagawan is palpable.

The present work in prose consists of forty questions with answers covering the entire range of spiritual disciplines required for the gaining of release (moksha). The questioner was Gambhiram Seshayya, one of the early devotees of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. He was a Municipal Overseer at Tiruvannamalai about 1900. Besides being an ardent Ramabhakta (worshipper of Rama) he was interested in the study and practice of Yoga. He used to read Swami Vivekananda's lectures on the different yoga's as also an English translation of the Rama-gita. For resolving the difficulties which he came across while studying these books and in his spiritual practices, he approached Bhagavan Sri Ramana from time to time. Bhagavan, who was only twenty-one years old, was then living in Virupaksha cave on Arunachala Hill. As he was keeping silent at the time not because of any vow taken but because he was not inclined to talk - he wrote out his answers to Seshayya's questions on bits of paper. These writings over the period 1900-1902 were later copied in a note-book by Seshayya. The material thus gathered was published by Sri Ramanasramam under the little Vichara-sangraham which literally means 'A Compendium of Self-Enquiry.' A digest of the teaching contained in this work was later printed in English bearing the title 'Self-Enquiry'. In that English version, the questions were omitted and the substance of Bhagavan's teaching was given, classifying it in twelve short chapters with appropriate headings. The present English translation is of the entire original text Vichara-sangraham as it is in Tamil. The Vicharasangraham has unique value in the sense that it constitutes the first set of instructions given by Bhagavan in his own handwriting.
