Magic was waiting for me in Patagonia. During a trip to Tierra del Fuego [Land of Fire] in 2005, I was moved by the ancient Selk'nam people. This incredible indigenous society is among the original tribes from the tip of South America, spanning modern day Argentina and Chile. Living in this territory for over 10,000 years, they suffered a brutal genocide with the arrival of Europeans around the second half of the 19th century. Fortunately, Selk'nam descendants have held strong to their ancestral beliefs and language to this day. I have been so privileged to learn from the Selk'nam people. My ongoing connection with this ethnic culture has influenced my artwork and me to live a greener life: beginning with a primal aesthetic, creating my own iconography, and to re-use the natural resources I am surrounded by. The body of work in this catalog invites us to tap into the boundless power of nature. In its essence, my art promotes cultural diversity, respect for all races and spiritual beliefs. ● Elisa Pritzker

Hunter-gatherer research has experienced enormous expansion over the past three decades. In the late 1950s less than a score of anthropologists were actively engaged in issue-oriented studies of foraging populations. Since then, the number of active researchers has grown into the hundreds. This book offers the most up-to-date anthology of papers on hunter-gatherer research and contains possibly the most comprehensive bibliography on hunter-gatherers ever published. It will be essential reading for all students of hunter-gatherer societies.

Creatures Of Fashion written by John Soluri and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-22 with History categories.

Today, the mention of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego conjures images of idyllic landscapes untouched by globalization. Creatures of Fashion upends this, revealing how the exploitation of animals—terrestrial and marine, domesticated and wild, living and dead—was central to the region's transformation from Indigenous lands into the national territories of Argentina and Chile. Drawing on evidence from archives and digital repositories, John Soluri traces the circulation of furs and fibers to explore how the power of fashion stretched far beyond Europe's houses of haute couture to entangle the fates of Indigenous hunters, migrant workers, and textile manufacturers with those of fur seals, guanacos, and sheep at the "end of the world." From the nineteenth-century rise of commercial hunting to twentieth-century sheep ranching to contemporary conservation-based tourism, Soluri's narrative explains how struggles for control over the production of commodities and the reproduction of animals drove the social and environmental changes that tied Patagonia to global markets, empires, and wildlife conservation movements. By exposing seams in national territories and global markets knit together by force, this book provides perspectives and analyses vital for understanding contemporary conflicts over mass consumption, the conservation of biodiversity, and struggles for environmental justice in Patagonia and beyond.

Loss And Wonder At The World S End written by Laura A. Ogden and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-13 with Social Science categories.

In Loss and Wonder at the World's End, Laura A. Ogden brings together animals, people, and things—from beavers, stolen photographs, lichen, American explorers, and birdsong—to catalog the ways environmental change and colonial history are entangled in the Fuegian Archipelago of southernmost Chile and Argentina. Repeated algal blooms have closed fisheries in the archipelago. Glaciers are in retreat. Extractive industries such as commercial forestry, natural gas production, and salmon farming along with the introduction of nonnative species are rapidly transforming assemblages of life. Ogden archives forms of loss—including territory, language, sovereignty, and life itself—as well as forms of wonder, or moments when life continues to flourish even in the ruins of these devastations. Her account draws on long-term ethnographic research with settler and Indigenous communities; archival photographs; explorer journals; and experiments in natural history and performance studies. Loss and Wonder at the World's End frames environmental change as imperialism's shadow, a darkness cast over the earth in the wake of other losses.
