La semántica no es el estudio de un conjunto particular de fenómenos o de problemas generales, sino un punto de vista, una actitud metódica, relativa al análisis de los signos y de las estructuras sintácticas de una lengua. No se puede precisar, por ello, el objeto de una semántica española con la misma facilidad con que se acota el de la fonología, la sintaxis o la lexicología. La pretensión de esta obra es la de suscitar la reflexión sobre unos problemas, para los que, desgraciadamente, tanto la rutina gramatical, como un cierto esnobismo, fanático de la «cientificidad» lingüística, parecen poseer soluciones definitivas e irrevocables. Las cuestiones que aquí se tratan, pese a que algunos puedan considerarlas como novedades, no son más que viejos problemas, planteados directa o indirectamente en la tradición gramatical o en la de la teoría lingüística, y que en opinión del autor, o no están resueltos o se han resuelto de una manera que no parece del todo convincente.
