El desarrollo de la prensa en España no estuvo exento de vacilaciones, pero tuvo un papel decisivo en la expansión de ideas que buscaban la modernización económica, política y social. En este libro se realiza un exhaustivo análisis de los compradores y lectores de periódicos en la Espala de la Ilustración. A partir de un corpus de 8526 suscriptores individuales, estudia los hábitos lectores de las distintos estamentos, grupos socioprofesionales y sexos, revisa la circulación de la prensa en la Península y las colonias, examina el impacto de las publicaciones nacionales y locales, y reconstruye el papel que ejercieron distintas instituciones, desde la Corona a las Sociedades Económicas de Amigos del País o la Inquisición. A New History of Iberian Feminisms is both a chronological history and an analytical discussion of feminist thought in the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal, and the territories of Spain - the Basque Provinces, Catalonia, and Galicia - from the eighteenth century to the present day. The Iberian Peninsula encompasses a dynamic and fraught history of feminism that had to contend with entrenched tradition and a dominant Catholic Church. Editors Silvia Bermúdez and Roberta Johnson and their contributors reveal the long and historical struggles of women living within various parts of the Iberian Peninsula to achieve full citizenship. A New History of Iberian Feminisms comprises a great deal of new scholarship, including nineteenth-century essays written by women on the topic of equality. By addressing these lost texts of feminist thought, Bermúdez, Johnson, and their contributors reveal that female equality, considered a dormant topic in the early nineteenth century, was very much part of the political conversation, and helped to launch the new feminist wave in the second half of the century.

Depuis son apparition comme genre, au XVIIIe siècle, jusqu'à la fin des années 1930, la presse du monde ibérique et ibéro-américain subit un double processus d'expansion et de diversification. D'une part, les élites économiques, politiques et culturelles en font d'emblée un instrument de cohésion en la mettant au service de leurs stratégies et de leurs systèmes de valeurs. Mais d'autre part, bien que destinée tout d'abord à un public restreint, elle touche à partir des années 1850 un nombre grandissant de lecteurs et connaît un âge d'or après 1900. Sans cesser de servir les intérêts des notables et des partis (avec un impact croissant grâce à l'évolution de ses moyens techniques et financiers), elle gagne en variété et finalement s'affirme tout à la fois comme lieu central du débat social et comme facteur premier de diffusion des normes de comportement et mentalités des élites. Au-delà des aspects structurels, c'est autour de l'incidence des rapports entre presse et élites sur les pratiques sociales et politiques que s'articule le présent ouvrage, qui constitue un nouveau jalon dans l'histoire du rôle des médias en Espagne et en Amérique latine.
