This study challenges the idea that, given the effectiveness of machine translation, major costs could be reduced by using monolingual staff to post-edit translations. It presents studies of machine translation systems, and current research into translation process.

Translating The European House written by Stefan Baumgarten and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-17 with Political Science categories.

This anthology of papers, written by Christina Schäffner, brings together a selection of articles on the theme of translation and politics. Written from the perspective of translation studies and critical discourse analysis, it provides an overview of the textual and ideological factors that determine processes of translation within the arena of international politics. The selected articles afford a fascinating insight into the dynamics of intercultural exchange against the backdrop of European politics from the fall of the Berlin Wall to debates on EU enlargement. By taking a context-sensitive approach to linguistic description, this book will be of interest to scholars in various adjacent fields of research, such as (applied) linguistics, (intercultural) communication studies, media studies, political science and the sociology of globalisation, as well as to relevant higher education programmes around the world. The discipline of translation studies has made its mark by conceptualising translation as a form of cross-cultural communication that transcends asymmetrical relations of power, foregrounding issues such as (colonial) domination, (cultural) hegemony, and ideology. To date, however, there has been no compelling evidence of the linguistic implications of transnational political communication, and little research has been done to help us to understand how political discourse at the international level presupposes translation. Featuring a wealth of examples from political text and talk, each article here links contextual features to the linguistic choices of political actors. By moving beyond national and cultural boundaries, these analyses help the reader to get to grips with the discursive implications of power politics, and to open up a new debate for a novel area of studies that might be termed cross-cultural political discourse analysis.

Studying the nature of translation theory and offering the reasons for success or failure of translation - this book is for anyone with an academic or professional interest in translation. It presents a new approach - combining a complex model of reality and a biocybernetic computeraided methodology for the study of translation processes. The study is discussing translation as systemic interaction and connecting for the first time Translation Studies with biocybernetics, fuzzy logic, information theory, intercultural communication, action theory, psychology and various technical disciplines (including Russian, German and English examples). It is a breakthrough in the understanding of irregularities in translation processes in theory and practice as well as in the training of translators and interpreters. Dr. Heidemarie Salevsky is professor of Translation Studies at Okan University, Istanbul, and worked as an interpreter, translator and lector. She was Head of the Translation Studies Department at Humboldt University in Berlin and professor of Translation Studies and Technical Communication in Magdeburg. She was a visiting professor at the Universities of New York/Binghamton, Heidelberg, Innsbruck and Vienna.Dr. Ina M ller works as a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. She worked as a graduate technical translator and lecturer.

Translation As Intercultural Communication written by Mary Snell-Hornby and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-08-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This selection of 30 contributions (3 workshop reports, 27 papers from 14 countries) concentrates on intercultural communication in its broadest sense: themes vary from dissident translation under the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines and translation as a process of power in the 3rd world context to drama translation and the role of the cognitive sciences in translation theory. Topics of current interest such as media interpreting, news translation, advertising, subtitling and the ethics of translation have a prominent position, as does the Workshop 'Contact as Conflict' which discusses the phenomenon of the hybrid text as a result of the translation process. The volume closes with the EST Focus debate on thorny issues of Methodology, Policy and Training. The volume demonstrates clearly the richness and breadth of the topics dealt with in Translation Studies today along with its complex interaction with neighbouring disciplines.

As a meaningful manifestation of how institutionalized the discipline has become, the new Handbook of Translation Studies is most welcome. The HTS aims at disseminating knowledge about translation and interpreting to a relatively broad audience: not only students who often adamantly prefer user-friendliness, researchers and lecturers in Translation Studies, Translation & Interpreting professionals; but also scholars, experts and professionals from other disciplines (among which linguistics, sociology, history, psychology). Moreover, the HTS is the first handbook with this scope in Translation Studies that has both a print edition and an online version. The HTS is variously searchable: by article, by author, by subject. Another benefit is the interconnection with the selection and organization principles of the online Translation Studies Bibliography (TSB). Many items in the reference lists are hyperlinked to the TSB, where the user can find an abstract of a publication. All articles are written by specialists in the different subfields and are peer-reviewed
