Semi-structured interviews are a qualitative approach to collecting data. While they begin with a set of standardized questions which are asked of multiple respondents, this method could also be described as an organized conversation that is guided by new information obtained as the interactive discussion unfolds. This case study highlights a series of research studies that used semi-structured interviews to collect data from criminal justice practitioners working in corrections and courts. These semi-structured interviews provided rich and detailed information from multiple perspectives on what it is like to work in the specific areas of institutional and community corrections, including problem-solving courts. This research method is useful for understanding viewpoints of key stakeholders within an agency because it allows the respondent to participate in the process and discuss concerns related to the research questions that are of primary importance to people working in that particular environment. Although semi-structured interviews begin with a set of questions, researchers need to be attuned to the ongoing discussion and ask pertinent follow-up questions that elaborate on more general knowledge. By digging deep into topic areas generated by participants, semi-structured interviews can help researchers understand how and why something occurs, and provide data to support more rigorous testing of processes and expected outcomes related to the specific procedures of a program.

Much of the work of user-centered design practitioners involves some type of interviewing. While interviewing is an important skill, many colleagues have little or no formal training in interviewing methods and often learn on the job with limited feedback on the quality of their interviews. This book teaches readers about the three basic interview methods: structured interviews, semi-structured interviews, and unstructured interviews. The author discusses the various strengths, weaknesses, issues with each type of interview, and includes best practices and procedures for conducing effective and efficient interviews. The book dives into the detailed information about interviews that haven’t been discussed before – readers learn how and when to ask the "how" and "why" questions to get a deeper understanding of problems, concepts, and processes, as well as discussions on laddering and critical incident techniques. Because so much of what UX practitioners do involves good interviewing skills, this is your one-stop resource with the definitions, processes, procedures and best practices on the basic approaches.

Mastering The Semi Structured Interview And Beyond written by Anne Galletta and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-17 with Education categories.

Mastering the Semi-Structured Interview and Beyond offers an in-depth and captivating step-by-step guide to the use of semi-structured interviews in qualitative research. By tracing the life of an actual research project–an exploration of a school district's effort over 40 years to address racial equality–as a consistent example threaded across the volume, Anne Galletta shows in concrete terms how readers can approach the planning and execution of their own new research endeavor, and illuminates unexpected real-life challenges they may confront and how to address them. The volume offers a close look at the inductive nature of qualitative research, the use of researcher reflexivity, and the systematic and iterative steps involved in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. It offers guidance on how to develop an interview protocol, including the arrangement of questions and ways to evoke analytically rich data. Particularly useful for those who may be familiar with qualitative research but have not yet conducted a qualitative study, Mastering the Semi-Structured Interview and Beyond will serve both undergraduate and graduate students as well as more advanced scholars seeking to incorporate this key methodological approach into their repertoire.

Research and Qualitative Interviews brings into focus the decisions that the interviewer faces by taking a data-led approach in order to open up choices and decisions in the process of planning for, managing, analysing and representing interviews. The chapters concentrate on the real-time, moment-by-moment nature of interview management and interaction. A key feature of the book is the inclusion of reflexive vignettes that foreground the voices and experience of qualitative researchers (both novices and more expert practitioners). The vignettes demonstrate the importance of reflecting on and learning from interactional experience. In addition, the book provides an overview of different types of interviews, commenting on the orientation and make-up of each type. Overall, this book encourages reflective thinking about the use of research interviews. It distinguishes between reflection, reflective practice and reflexivity. All the chapters focus on recurring choices, dilemmas and puzzles; offering advice in opening out and engaging with these aspects of the research interview.

Investigating Educators Perceptions Of Stem Interrogation written by Brian K. Sandall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Education, Secondary categories.

This study utilized a semi-structured interview approach to identify phenomena that are related to integrated STEM education by addressing the question, what are the critical components of an integrated STEM definition and what critical factors are necessary for an integrated STEM definition's implementation? Thirteen expert practitioners were identified and interviewed. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for content in three different ways, by person, by interview question, and across all interviews using exploratory data analysis methods. Ten identified phenomena were grouped into two classes: structural implementation phenomena and interpersonal implementation phenomena. The structural implementation phenomena were: subject integration/project-based learning/design-based education, non-traditional assessment, STEM content, time, professional development, and outside support (from business and industry). The interpersonal implementation phenomena include: leadership, collaboration, willingness, authentic/meaningful/relevant experiences for participants, and outside support (from people in business and industry). The analysis concluded that these phenomena could be considered both critical components and key implementation factors due to their interconnected nature. The data showed that the identified phenomena are necessary as part of an integrated STEM curriculum which makes them critical components, and that the identified phenomena are necessary to create and implement an integrated STEM setting, making them implementation factors as well. Implications for further research include: the possibility of looking at the interconnectedness of the phenomena, examining how each phenomenon contributes to integrated STEM, and measuring current STEM implementations to see if they incorporate the identified phenomena. Additionally, inclusion of an absent phenomenon could be researched to see if integrated STEM education is improved.
