Semiconductor quantum dots represent one of the fields of solid state physics that have experienced the greatest progress in the last decade. Recent years have witnessed the discovery of many striking new aspects of the optical response and electronic transport phenomena. This book surveys this progress in the physics, optical spectroscopy and application-oriented research of semiconductor quantum dots. It focuses especially on excitons, multi-excitons, their dynamical relaxation behaviour and their interactions with the surroundings of a semiconductor quantum dot. Recent developments in fabrication techniques are reviewed and potential applications discussed. This book will serve not only as an introductory textbook for graduate students but also as a concise guide for active researchers.

The purpose of this collective book is to present a non-exhaustive survey of sp- related phenomena in semiconductors with a focus on recent research. In some sense it may be regarded as an updated version of theOpticalOrientation book, which was entirely devoted to spin physics in bulk semiconductors. During the 24 years that have elapsed, we have witnessed, on the one hand, an extraordinary development in the wonderful semiconductor physics in two dim- sions with the accompanying revolutionary applications. On the other hand, during the last maybe 15 years there was a strong revival in the interest in spin phen- ena, in particular in low-dimensional semiconductor structures. While in the 1970s and 1980s the entire world population of researchers in the ?eld never exceeded 20 persons, now it can be counted by the hundreds and the number of publications by the thousands. This explosive growth is stimulated, to a large extent, by the hopes that the electron and/or nuclear spins in a semiconductor will help to accomplish the dream of factorizing large numbers by quantum computing and eventually to develop a new spin-based electronics, or “spintronics”. Whether any of this will happen or not, still remains to be seen. Anyway, these ideas have resulted in a large body of interesting and exciting research, which is a good thing by itself. The ?eld of spin physics in semiconductors is extremely rich and interesting with many spectacular effects in optics and transport.

Theory Of Semiconductor Quantum Devices written by Fausto Rossi and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Primary goal of this book is to provide a cohesive description of the vast field of semiconductor quantum devices, with special emphasis on basic quantum-mechanical phenomena governing the electro-optical response of new-generation nanomaterials. The book will cover within a common language different types of optoelectronic nanodevices, including quantum-cascade laser sources and detectors, few-electron/exciton quantum devices, and semiconductor-based quantum logic gates. The distinguishing feature of the present volume is a unified microscopic treatment of quantum-transport and coherent-optics phenomena on ultrasmall space- and time-scales, as well as of their semiclassical counterparts.

Provides a modern introduction to semiconductor physics, presentingthe basic information necessary to understand semiconductors, alongwith some of the latest theories and developments. Based on theauthor's undergraduate course, this book bridges the gap betweenbasic subjects such as quantum mechanics and Maxwell's equationsand the fundamental processes determining the behaviour ofsemiconductors. Following a quantum mechanics approach this text ispredominantly aimed at scientists rather then engineers, and formsthe basis for the understanding of modern mesoscopic physics insemiconductors and quantum devices like resonant tunnelingdiodes. Rather than attempting to comprehensively cover all aspects ofsemiconductor physics, this text aims to cover the most importantand interesting aspects of this subject to scientists. Startingwith the development of semiconductor physics from basic quantummechanics, the text moves on to cover band structure and effectivemass theory, before covering electron-phonon coupling and chargetransport. It concludes with a chapter on optical transitions.Students will need some knowledge of quantum mechanics and solidstate although this is covered to some extent in the book. FEATURES * Concise introduction to the basics of semiconductor physics * Bridges the gap between fundamental subjects such as quantummechanics and Maxwell's equations and the processes determining thebehaviour of semiconductors * Describes semiconductor theory from a full quantum mechanicalapproach. An accessible introduction, avoiding reliance on grouptheory CONTENTS: Preface; Notation Conventions; Introduction; Electrons, nuclei and Hamiltonians; Band Structure; The k - p Approximation;Effective Mass Theory; The Crystal Lattice; Electron-phononCoupling; Charge Transport, Optical Transitions; Band Electrons inan Optical Field; Appendix A: The Hydrogen Atom; Appendix B: TheHarmonic Oscillator; Appendix C: Perturbation Theory; AppendixD:Tensors in Cubic Crystals; Appendix E: The Classical Limit;Appendix F: Some Fourier Transforms; Appendix G: Exercises;Bibliography.

Layered metal-insulator-semiconductor microstructures have become an important research area in semiconductor microelectronics. New devices utilize phenomena occuring at or near the semiconductor surface directly. This monograph provides a survey of the diverse experimental and theoretical results for electron and hole transport in surface and subsurface regions of semiconductors, with an emphasis on the mechanisms involved and special measurement procedures necessary, for example in Hall current measurements. This English edition has been substantially revised and updated from the original Russian edition.
