Fin dall’antichità il famoso motto “Conosci te stesso” corrispondeva alla ricerca del proprio daimon, ovvero di quella forza (o serie di forze) che agita la nostra esistenza, impossessandosene. Secondo Eraclito, questi “demoni” sono nostri alleati; Cartesio, invece, li considera temibili avversari. La storia della filosofia e della letteratura è costellata di filosofi “indemoniati”. Socrate è posseduto dal demone della maieutica e della curiosità; il demone di Spinoza è la libertà d’espressione; Kafka è ossessionato dal demone del dubbio e dell’incapacità. Poi ci siamo noi, ormai non più felici né infelici, ma disfelici: da quali demoni siamo stati invasi? Come possiamo riconoscerli e, mettendoli a nudo, sconfiggerli? Oggi i demoni formano una moltitudine: quello dell’attenzione, per esempio, cerca di catturare la nostra vita in un gorgo di contenuti che ammutolisce la nostra vera essenza; o il demone della dopamina da popolarità ci spinge alla soddisfazione di bisogni sempre più effimeri; moderni odradek infestano i social network, spingendoci verso una condizione anestetizzante di illusoria amortalità. Ma se è vero che ogni demone porta con sé caratteristiche e punti di forza peculiari, è altrettanto vero che tutti hanno in comune un tallone d’Achille e questo ci permette di riconoscerli per evitare di caderne vittima. Con il tono diretto e il gusto per la provocazione che lo contraddistinguono, Rick DuFer cerca di scandagliare le molte entità che oggi prendono possesso della nostra vita, e segnala anche precise vie di fuga dalle nevrosi cui non siamo affatto condannati.
